I'd just like to say how fascinating and impressive it's been. This is a monumental project, and your modelling skills and attention to detail are superb.

In my other life I'm a railway modeller (nasty dirty steamy things, ugh), and I wondered if you were aware of the Scale Link range of products? http://www.scalelink.co.uk/acatalog/Etc ... coupe.html Amongst other things, they have a number of etched brass meshes in various sizes which might have suited your handrails. Unfortunately the online catalogue isn't very friendly.

I look forward to further updates on this wonderful build.
Hi Armstrong 440 Thank you for you kind comments . Yes I have used Scale Link in the past and they are good . Must have a closer look at their mesh . Thanks for the information and welcome to the site and of course to the hobby . If I can be of any help let me know.

Do you really think that the model that you are building is a "hobby"?
I would call it art... :cool_2:
The levell that you had reached is beyond the "hobby" boundaries.

Regards from a "amateur" modeller.
Hi Filipvs a good question but for me it remains very much a hobby. There are many on this site that produce outstanding pieces of work and yes some are created entirely from material that is to hand. ARH is a past master of creating much from almost nothing. I would say building from scratch is as close as you can get to the ideals of the artist, that of creativity. Seeing Bill Waldorfs work take form is a lesson in high craftsmanship and a joy to behold. One of my passions is to visit maritime museums just to view the models many of which were created in an age when the model had an importance second only to the full size ship. Although for me it is a hobby yet I envy the craftsman from the past whose job it was to create these scale replicas that we can still appreciate today. One of the finest models I have ever laid eyes on is not in a maritime museum but in a house, no ordinary house but the home of Armstrong of Vickers Armstrong. It is the model of the Japanese Battleship Hatsuse. Now if there is a case for a model being classed as an art form this is it? This model has presence . A model created in gold and silver yet retaining all the quality of an exact scale model , a beautiful piece of maritime model making It really does takes my breath away .

Dave. I've been so wrapped up in my own build that I have been lacking in looking around the board.
Your Kiev is absolutely beautiful! In a word... Gorgeous! :thumbs_up_1:

Dave:
I understand you very well. I feel the same when I see a good model of a ship (only of ships). Vickers Amstrong produced a very good model of the liner s.s <<ORIANA>>. I saw it in internet and I have experienced a very intense excitation. The reasons are, apart that the model is very nice, that I live in Vigo (spain) and the <<ORIANA>> was here many times in the past and I went to the pier to see her with my family... many good feelings I remenber from that sunny days watching elegant <<ORIANA>> manouvering in the Vigo harbour!!!

Best regards. :wave_1:[/quote]
Hi Filipvs Yes Oriana was like an elegant lady . The model is in Barrow -in -Furness .

The arrangement inside the funnel uptake had been bothering me for months .
So I let it ride until some evidence of how the top of the casing was fitted
came to light. The evidence surfaced and at last I could press on and not a
minute to soon as I was about to start adding the detailing to the main superstructure.
Inside the funnel on Kiev.
Image
To construct the internal frame I used , copper tube, brass tube , nickel wire ,
brass wire
Image
Next job was to prepare the area inside the casing . The idea was to construct
the frame work insitu but make it removable so the inside could be easily airbrushed
Image
The net result is this
Image
The frame work removed and surprisingly strong
Image
Preparation for airbrushing
Image
Airbrushing the funnel frame work separately
Image
Combining the frame with the funnel .

Image
Dave Wooley One job less but new detail always seem to appear just as Im
making progress. More to come . :thumbs_up_1: :wave_1:

Dude, Dave. Wow. Truly awesome. It's the little detail that really makes the difference, like looking down into the uptakes and seeing not only that it actually goes somewhere, but there's a LADDER in there!!!

Nice work Dave.I'm always amazed by the quality of finish you get on everything.

I do have a question though. When I look at the picture of the full casing, I think that not all the angled cross-struts rest on the same level. Some seem to angled above and some below the level of the structure. I realise that it's not the greatest picture, but take a look and see if you can spot what I mean.
Give me a ping, Vasily. One ping only.

Hi North Sea you are quite right . For ease of construction the four struts in question which are angled upwards and down wards in the picture are not quite the same on the model . The reason for the slight of hand is to allow all the frame to be made as one so as it could be lifted clear with ease. Yes the frame could be made as per the photo but it would have been almost impossible to lift it clear to spray within the funnel casing because of the internal perimeter band that the frame rests on . What you see is an illusion of perspective but some compromise had to be made. Thanks for picking up on that one , always good to get that type of feedback .

Hi Roy Yep I just love the Albion Alloys material . You can even get the tube in micro bore to take wire that is ultra fine . They are good very good.

Hi Norbert my good friend .To answer your question .The frame work this time is not soldered but glued . The reason for this is the shape of the funnel . I needed to build the frame in place and in order to do this I could not have soldered the frame together successfully hence the alternative of using cyno. It worked , thankfully .

Hi Dave,

I need to get some of these Albion Alloys products, I guess you buy it in the UK?!

BTW, do you know a Mr. Dave Weldon working on a 1/96th scale HMS HOOD?

Happy modeling,

Bernd.
