That's for remote controlled 25mm Bushmaster! All the ships are being fitted with at least 2 of those bad boys.

Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
Its more than remote controlled, the 25mm Bushmaster is a stabilized mount so it can stay on target while the ship sways and rolls. Its far more effective than the manually aimed version.

Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
Hi guys, I am recently back into warship modeling.
My first kit is the Academy 1/350 USS Oliver Hazard Perry, any tips or tricks, or things I should be watching for with this kit?
I plan on building a full hull version, and it appears that I will have to correct the rudder, as it seems to be centered in the kit.
Thanks for the info,
Chris

Hey Fletcher! I am going to burst a lot of bubbles here but if you want to make it a modern Perry you will need to leave off the Mk13 launcher. The US Navy no longer has FFGs. They are all FFs; no guided missile capability.
If you wanted to be cool about it and make a "modern" version you could build a stand over the Mk13's magazine and put a Mk38 Mod2 gun in it's center. Good luck with your build! You will find a wealth of information in these threads and with these people. I cannot wait to see progress shots.

Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
Thanks, I will probably just build this one straight out of the box, except for correcting the rudder position. Once I get my skills back, I may choose to do some modifications to future kits.
Can anybody tell me how far the rudder is to be offset from Center?
Thanks,
Chris

Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
The kit is a bit of an amalgam of several Perrys. It comes with both long and short hull stern/flight deck pieces but only decals for the Perry (a short hull) and only an SH-60 (only on the long hulls). Instructions tell you to build a short hull and put the SH-60 on it which is wrong. The short hulls only carried SH-2 Sea Sprites and never got RAST. ONLY the ships with RAST, the long hulls, carried SH-60s. If you know what to look for you can find the appropriate parts and build either version but you'll need to get some aftermarket SH-2s and/or more decals. WEM makes the helos and Iron Shipwright's makes the decals. If you need help figuring out which parts to use for which version let me know and I can give you part numbers. Feel free to keep asking questions as well man, can't wait to see your FFG!

Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
Thanks Cliffy B, I will remember that....I considered either building it as the Oliver Hazard Perry, with the short hull and finding the right choppers, or as the USS Ford, with the long hull and using the SH60s. Are the decals still available that are shown a few pages back?
I'm going after putty tommorrow, and some more glue....maybe even paint....then the hull should be coming along

Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
Does anyone make a model of the MK38 Mod 2? Where would I find dims on the platform that holds it?

Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
Veteran Models makes the Mk-38 Mod 1 (crew served version) in 1/350. If you want to make the remote controlled version you'll have to scratch one out of the Mod 1. Same for the platform over the old Mk-13.
Look around at photos of the FFGs on Navy Newsstand for high-res closeups. They'll be you're best bet. Search for the Mk-38 as well.

Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
Well I decided to go with the origional verion of the ship, and also to build the OHP herself. I will order the correct helos from WEM and keep the SH60s for other projects.
Right now I have the hull assembled with the deck on it, and the main superstructure is assembled. So it's time for paint.
I am really impressed with the Academy kit, so far everything has gone together perfectly!!!

Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
Hi
Just started my Academy kit as well. Have the PE from White Ensign Mine is a long hull. and as its a 2002 build still a FFG. What this about the rudder not right - can anyone tell me were it should be before i set it in. (that was to be tonights job)
What errors are there on these kits - I notive th eWhite Ensign has two different boat decks to be used - which one of a long hull (Jarrett) in 2002. I've been trawling teh web for photos to aid in teh build.

Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
Dave,
In the kit the rudder is centered in the ship, however; from everything I have read, it should be offset 18" to the Starboard side.

Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
Anyone know why the rudder is offset? Is it due to the torque of having only one screw?
