Here is the result of work on USS Frank Knox.
Indeed, Pierre Marchal has right : These are the rudders.

I then put in place the pieces that make the connection between the hull and propeller shafts.

Finally, I finished the details that are situated below the waterline

The rest happens quickly with USS Buchanan.

I add brass to have a better finish.
To scratchbuild the rudders, I am inspired by the work on the Kirov by Carr (who is an excellent modeler).

So here is the next.
Just as Tunisien and Frank Knox, I scratchbuild all the details below the waterline what I found.

Then, I made the propeller shafts, which were easier to make than those of Tunisien because they are bigger.

The junction of the propeller shafts to the hull.

Then I drilled and detailed the axis of the rudder.

The propeller shafts and rudder are in place bet, but not glued.

Two elements of which I am proud : propellers guards.

I pierced the portholes and glued the rigols.

Buchanan is ready for painting should start this weekend.
Now I'm going to build the propeller shafts of Frank Knox.

I've come late to this post but I'll be following it closely from here on. Stunning and inspiring work!

I'm fascinated by the extensive use of brass and I'm learning many techniques that I may be able to adapt to my own efforts. Thanks for sharing!

I have one question. You've modelled the underwater scoops (not sure what the actual term is) as having a raised frame around them. I've seen conflicting photos and drawings as to whether the frames were raised from the hull or flush with the surface of the hull. What did you use as a reference for this particular detail? Do you have photos or drawings that clearly and specifically show this as raised?

I can't wait to see more!!

Concerning the "underwater scoops", it is quite complicated.
I found no detailed photos and very detailed plans. So, I "interpreted" what I scratchbuild.
For Tunisien, I downloaded the French archives, the "docking plan". This has been my best source of information for Destroyer Escort.

For USS Frank Knox (Gearing class), I am inspired by the work formaidable Rotorhead its USS Fletcher. I think for this kind of detail the two types are similar.

For USS Buchanan, I used the plans of USS and USS Davison Nield found on hnsa.org.

In short, I worked with very few information. I had great difficulty in finding photos of propeller shafts from USS Buchanan and Tunisien.
I would also like to thank Master Cadman and Darius Lipinski for their help.

Hello,

I am very impressed with your work! I have a question about placement of underwater scoops in Buchanan. I went through DD-616 & DD-618 plans as well as through some drydock photos and it is quite hard to tell where particular items were placed. OK, it can be a bit easier with condenser scoops (it can be figured out from placement of actual condensers in the hull), but the rest has left me puzzled. Have you used any other references - I am asking particularly about Buchanan? Or maybe - could you give any hints what do I have to look at on those plans, please?

Since I have not found any serious documentation, I interpreted the information I had.
I am enclosing a plan that I used. With photos from USS Agerholm, I've deduce the positions of probes (red and green circles).

Hello everyone
A small update on USS Buchanan.
I glued the sidelight glasses of the portholes. Then I glued the front of the bridge. After that,I detailed the vertical portion located between the two bridges.

For the fun, I am opened a door.

Of course, I also detailed the interior.

Then I sratchbuilt the hawses pipe and the hookups.

Finally, I painted the deck

Now, at this level of work, as I can not do everything at once. So I decided to present you the different options in further work:

1) I scratchbuild the superstructures of Tunisien with copper sheets and profiles of Evergreen.

2 �) I build the superstructures of USS Buchanan with the parts of the model that I will greatly improve.

3) I finished the hull of USS Frank Knox.

4) You do not have preferences, opinions, or even, you do not care (which is largely your right).
