1/144 Kiev by Dave Wooley

Once again I�m requesting help. Painting figures is a completely new venture for me, I have mentioned this before but now I�m at the stage where I can start work on the deck crew . My request is �where do I start�? The figures are Preiser airforce at 1:144 scale so the positions of each figure will be almost the same as those that you would see on the deck of Kiev ?

Hi Dave,

usually I start with a 0,3 mm drillbit, drilling a hole into one foot and attaching a 0,3 mm brass rod using CA glue.

Now I can put the figure into a temporary base for painting. I start with the face and hands. Then trousers, blouse and/or jacket, hat, hair. Maybe some touch up on face and hands again. Last step the shoes.

After everything dried completely I drybrush the whole figure with white/light grey enamel.

Attached an example of 1/72 Preiser figures and scratchbuilt HO-Gauge figures for the harbor dio. But I also did this for N-Gauge railroad figures - but have no photo at hand right now.

Hi Dave,

you are right - no basic coat for the Preiser figures, since they are made from Styrene - a very good material for any paint (as you already showed us ).

I prefer Acrylics for the speed of work, but enamels are good as well.

No masking, just fun!

I believe you will populate your flight deck with more figures than you already have....

Dave, if you have any oils you can experiment a little. Undercost the figure in white and then paint clothing in thinned oil of your chosen colour. The colour should accumulate in the engraved details and the raised areas will be highlighted by the white undercoat. Used to work for me, but I haven't painted any figures in ages.

I'm catching up on this thread and have to say, I just don't get it. How can you call this a model of the Kiev??? It looks nothing like the real ship!! All that nice uniform paint and not one little bit of bird poop to be seen!! It CAN'T be a Cold War Soviet ship!!, it just can't be!!

Truly an amazing piece of craftsmanship. I know how it feels when it all starts to come together. I'm sure the photos don't do it justice. A milestone in 1/144. Congradulations...an excellent build.....

Hi Bill Good to hear from you and thanks for the comments. I have been looking closely at the deck crew on your Santee hopfully to learn as much as I can .

Hi Dave,
bring your figures plus a small selection of paints and i'll run you through the process at Telford.
I'll be on the Finewaterline stand.
Acrylics would be better as they dry fast, plus a fine brush

the basic idea to create depth is as follows

B= A but darkened

C =A but lightened

Where the colours join they can be blended into each other creating a gentle change in shade effect

Hi Andrew The dates for Telford are 13-14th November . It would be great if you could make it .The 3 day Warwick International Model Boat show is on over the same weekend . A number of modellers try to do the both .
