It took me a while to work out how to scratch-built the missle pods, eventually I need to use a mesh to represent the slots and built the box out of thin plastic card. Little bit hard because it is very small..
First use plastic card to build the body, then install the mesh onto it afterward. Completed missle pods.

Re: IJN ZUIKAKAU Nichimoco 1:500> Modification & Super-Detai
In making of the Type 89 12.7cm 40Cal Anti-aircraft guns, I have been thinking of how to make it since the start of the project.. But did not get a solution until now. The original mould definitely cannot be used because it is simply "crap", so what i did is to cut, trim & add the mould in order to create the right shape of the body itself. Then added details on it & gradulally built the details up one by one.
STEP 1 - Original mould at left, I cut & trim the mould to the right shape first. STEP 2 - Then added some plastic card to built up the body shape. STEP 3A - In the first one, what I did was to drill a hole at the obervation post & added a 1/700 photo-etch railing as window frame first, then added grab rails. The second one I used a different method, reverse the process because grab rails can be easily damaged so they should be added last. (Refer to next post.)

STEP 3B - Refer to previous post, in this second one I added the details first before adding the grabrails. This would minimize the damage to grabrails. I added the window frame, door. The circular base is a plastic card hole punched by a paper hole puncher, the size is just right!
STEP 4 - The mould of the guns is not too bad, so the only thing I changed is the gun barrel. This shows the first two finished Type 89 guns. I am very satisfy with the result.
STEP 5 - Overall one of this gun took me 1.5 days to complete.

Re: IJN ZUIKAKAU Nichimoco 1:500> Modification & Super-Detai
As a scratch built exercise this is simply stunning.
But i wonder , if the amount of time put into this would be better used on the new Zuikakau from Fuzimi?
These new offerings are simply light years ahead , and with the skills and time as in this project , put into them they could produce amazing results.Just couldn't help thinking about it.
But of course is all about getting the satisfaction from creating something on your own , instead of finding it ready.I understand that.
I admire you mostly for not abandoning this, since the newer kits are out and for your resolution to see it finished.

Re: IJN ZUIKAKAU Nichimoco 1:500> Modification & Super-Detai
Had been thinking of how to do super detail these two Type 89 guns in shield since start of this project. But they took me 1 week to make. Very happy with result, especially the shutters.
STEP 1 - Drill an opening for the obervation post. Note how crap the original mould really is.. STEP 2 - Took me a while to work out how to do the middle circular part... what I did was using a thick plastic card to do the wall first, then cover it with a thiner plastic card. Of cos I also need to cut two slots in the thin card for the gun barrel & shutters. Note the original mould at left. STEP 3 - This is how I made the shutter > using a Tamiya's scriber to create lines on a strip of plastic. Continue next post

Continue from previous post
STEP 4 - The middle circular gun barrel with shutters completed, then inserted into the shield's platform. The most important thing I wanted to achieve is to make sure shutters is behind the opening/slots, otherwise it doesn't make sense. STEP 5 - Added triangular support, railings, windows etc. STEP 6 - Completed.

Outrageous!!!
wonderfully inspiring to make one endeavour to raise one's own standards.
Nothing is impossible-- just need sheer willpower and inovation==> both of which you have in copious quantities!!
breathless!
