IF you are using enamels, WEMs "Baltic Hellgrau" is a nice, light grey/off white

Better to add a dark gray than black, since it will have a small amount of blue in it as well. Straight black/white greys were seldom used by any country.

Any good diagrams for the rigging of Scharnhorst available?

Magnus, have you looked in my gallery? It's a good place to start, but I will try to make a few screen grabs specifically of the rigging for you over the next few days if you will be patient with me. It's something I have been meaning to do for a while now.

Although it does not contain a rigging diagram as such, the 'Battleship Scharnhorst' volume of the Kagero Super Drawings in 3D contains a set of 1/350 plans which clearly show the rigging. I highly recommend this book to anyone who intends to build the Dragon model.

Kagero 3D book is very good and highly reccomended.

If you want to have a good view of Scharnhorts railings, than order from Bundesarchiv the drawing number : RM 2515-34 and go with it.

That original drawing was taken as base for a good 1/300 Scharnhorst drawing made by this company that does have all KM major warship drawings too available :

What would be required to back date the 1/350 Dragon kit to a Channel Dash Scharnhorst?

Also, the WEM PE for the Scharnhorst showed up the other day. It's a rather compact set, especially compared to what the Prinz Eugen and Hipper sets, but then I guess that speaks to the quality of the Dragon kit. Regardless, it's very sharp and will really add to the finished model.

What would be required to back date the 1/350 Dragon kit to a Channel Dash Scharnhorst?

(I'm not going into detail with the paint job, that would be another story ...)

You would need to add a Flakvierling on top of turret Bruno, plus corresponding ammo lockers plus a bulwark around it. Then, I think the ship did not feature all four of the passive Sumatra antennas (these are those little frames which look like a butterfly, mounted on all four sides of the foretop gallery bulwark), maybe just one, facing forward, mounted to the bulwark of the (still open) Admiral's Bridge. I do not have enough photos to be absolutely sure that the other three sides of the ship were not covered by those antennas. I think they were used to pick up radar signals from which you could tell friend from foe.

I'm not quite sure when they changed the radar housing and battle observer's post above the range finder on the foretop from the round to the square versions, could be right after the Channel Dash, or just before ... same applies to the overall shape of the foretop gallery platform/bulwark ...

Maybe someone else with better knowledge about Scharny knows a bit more ... Rob maybe?

Cerberus - Channel Dash ) than you surely have to set back the radar's equipment, remove the closed admiral bridge since this was added after the Channel Dash on Scharnhorst.

Than you have to add the 20 mm vierling on top of Bruno turret used only during the Channel Dash and immediately removed while in Germany.

By comparing the 2 drawings here under everything should be clear :

Of the two, the updated is closer. There might have been slight variations anyway. Are you building the Dragon 1/350? I believe their paint instructions are closer to the real thing (but of course, I can be wrong).

G'Day all. Another paint colour question. Were the timber decks painted above the 01 level. That is the timber decks on the bridge and other areas. I'm thinking they were painted the same colour as the hull in 1943 the two tone paint scheme. All dark grey except for the bow and the stern.
