Re: 1/350 Kirov (Trumpeter Modified)
For people interested I have found someone who is taking a real challenge. Building the Pjotr Velikij at scale 1/100
He looks like he has just started construction of the hull in the link below.

Re: 1/350 Kirov (Trumpeter Modified)
Bob- How do you plan to place the netting around the helicopter pad on the stern? Trumpeter's directions say to place it extended all around the stern area, but two Kirovs in the Gallery show little or no netting at all.
Thanks, Rusty

Re: 1/350 Kirov (Trumpeter Modified)
Thanks Bob, I did find a pic of a Kirov class and saw the helopad. I'll leave all the standard railing around the stern except for the middle part where I'll place a small section of the safety net. I can't imagine where Trumpeter came up with what they did!

Re: 1/350 Kirov (Trumpeter Modified)
Bob,
Yup. Got the lower hull painted, >most< of the superstructure in primer.....& there we wait til WEM release the promised ( According to Dave Carter @ WEM last year...) second P.E set for the sister/brother ships of the class to go with the initial release.
It`s a "from the box" build, pretty much, other than the P.E, but any glaring errors will be dealt with along the way.
Hope the August bank holiday give you a few minutes to workon Kirov again!

Re: 1/350 Kirov (Trumpeter Modified)
Bob- What do you plan to do with the large V shaped antenna on the rear superstructure tower? I looked at Chuck Bauer's Kirov in the Gallery and his looks much different that the over simplified kit version. I have some similar pieces from a 1/350 Kuznetsov PE set, I suppose I could bash those as a solution. Is Chuck's similar to any photos from the fleet?
Thanks, R.

Re: 1/350 Kirov (Trumpeter Modified)
Hi Bob- I found a very good piece on the Kuznetsov PE set I have, it's one of the funnel yardarms, seemingly custom made to also function as a mount for the Kirov Y antenna. I can also dress up the antenna itself with some other pieces. I didn't realize the kit's piece was so lacking in detail until the build was so far along that it just didn't make sense to purchase a PE set for the Kirov, but this is a very workable solution for me. Too much temptation to be creative again, I suppose, but it's fun for me!
I noticed you had both flat screen arrays on top of the structure, do you plan to keep those or replace one with the oval type?

I may also suggest assistance in translating from Russian if you need it
. And also there are two people whom I simply Googled here, who claim they served on Petr (forum topic "look for people who served on ...." http"remove"://www."remove"webarmy.ru/forums/theme.php?th=8072

Hi Bob,
just arrived home and as usual I jumped in on your thread as one of the first things to do. I'm surprised to see there are almost no updates since September. What's going on? Is the build suspended for now? Out of time?
Hope to hear something from you soon and see some progress too!!
Best Regards,
Roel

Re: 1/350 Kirov (Trumpeter Modified)
Following this one with great interest.
I have a (presently stalled) Kalinin that I won at a modeling show the other year. It is my first (and will be my last) model in 1/700 scale - way too small for my aging eyes. It is the Trumeter kit, and while catering for several of the unique features for Kalinin, there are a few details that are incorrect and needs correcting, and a few features that are missing and needs to be added. Most notably are the sonar dome under the keel and the intake scoope under the bottom of the hull (doing a full hull build). I will be using the WEM etched set, and while apparetly designed for the Pit Road kit, it looks like the parts will fit the Trumpeter kit too.
