The ship models of Robert Wilson...

I am not moving especially to calmer seas, it is just the way things have turned out. Of the last few pictures, the DARTFORD & KASSOS models were made several years ago. FALLS F FOYERS, RAMON DE LARRINAGA and DESEADO were all recent private commissions. I expect there will be another one in a sea soon.

Bob Wilson has completed another stunning steel sailing ship!!!

at a scale of 32�=1 the hull measures 8.6 inches loa


The British steel-hulled four-masted barque DONNA FRANCISCA was completed in 1892 by Russell of Port Glasgow for J. Hayes. She had a registered tonnage of 2,277 with a length of 277.5 feet and a beam of 42 feet
.
She was very up-to-date and was one of the finest sailing ships ever built. Despite this, very few people have ever heard of her. She had a large water ballast tank that could be filled our emptied within 24 hours, thus removing the back-breaking work of conventional ballast. Her rig was stump�tgallant, also known as jubilee rig. This meant that she carried no royals.
The sails on each of the square-rigged masts was: course, lower and upper topsails, lower and upper t�gallants. Because the masts were shorter than normal, the yards were longer, thus making up any lost sail area.
She was very full-bodied for large cargo capacity. Seamen often considered the bald-headed rig as ugly, but the DONNA FRANCISCA was still an imposing ship and one of the type that I would have liked to sail in if they were still here. In the closing years of the 19th century, she made three consecutive runs from Australia to the English Channel in less than 100 days. On another occasions, she sailed from Rio de Janeiro to Melbourne in ballast in less than 48 days. Sold to German owners in 1910, she lost her attractive name and became HERBERT...!
She changed ownership again and became LEMKENHAFEN in 1922 and was finally wrecked in 1924.

I chose to build this ship because I liked her powerful appearance and I liked her attractive name as much as I liked her supposed ugliness. One of the �rank and file� that gave years and years of solid service, virtually without recognition.

In just two short months Bob Wilson has completed a full hull model of the British India liner KENYA, completed in 1951 by Barclay, Curle, of Glasgow.

This ship carried 194 1st class passengers and 103 in tourist.

14,464 gross tons. 540 feet long, 71 feet wide.

She is sister ship to the much more well-known SS UGANDA.

Distinctive and handsome ships with a huge funnel!

Bob Wilson has --incredibly... completed yet another model of the five masted sailing ship PREUSSEN at anchor with sails furled--to complement the version under full sail on page 1 of this thread.

Completed in 1902, she could carry 8,000 tons of cargo and ran on the long haul from Hamburg to the nitrate ports on the west coast of South America and back.
She had a length of 407.8 feet and a beam of 53.5 feet. The hull, masts and spars were all made from steel. The total length of rigging including wire, hemp and chain, came to an amazing 137,727 feet. She had 248 rigging screws and 1,260 running blocks.
The model took me 37 days to build at a total of 115 hours. Built to a scale of 25'=1", the hull has a length of about 16 inches on the waterline." <<<

Bobs Model of Primrose Hill is making steady and solid progress

All the backstays are in place and some of the sails have been rigged.

The picture below is NOT the PRIMROSE HILL, but is just to show the type of setting that the completed model will have. All three lower t'gallants will be set and drawing properly though. Probably have one or two more staysails set as well.

I have now set and rigged the foresails. The main and cro'jack yards, together with their furled sails have also been fitted and rigged. The next nine sails (lower and upper topsails and lower t'gallants, will all be set). Everything above the lower t'gallants will be furled.

The ship had a short career.... 1886-1900? The ship lasted only 14 yrs ....


Bob says:

In 1900, the ship began her voyage from Liverpool. The weather was very bad and the captain ordered the services of a steam tug to get them out to sea. The tow line broke off Holyhead and the PRIMROSE HILL piled up and was lost. I am not sure if it was "all hands," but if there were any survivors, it was only one or two. Captain & Mrs. Wilson were lost in the wreck and also the12 apprentices and most, if not all, of the crew.
