Re: Calling all IJN Nagato class fans
Dear fellow battleship Nagato fans,
First of all, I wish to thank everyone who has posted all the beautiful photos with photo etch details added.
But so far, all the posts cover only the WW-2 versions for Nagato.
I am interested in the Nagato as it was first built in 1920 - (what a tough looking ship!), and for its first rebuild in 1931 with the curved forward stack.
I have the Maru Graphic no. 2 on Nagato and it has small deck views for 1920 and 1931 but they lack detail.
If nothing better exists on these deck views I will do my best with what I have so far.
I also have the superb AJ Press NAGATO / MUTSU vol 1 (51) and vol 2 (52).
Volume 1 has a superb fold out plan with detailed deck views for its WW-2 appearance.
There are also superb side profile views for the 1920 and 1931 version but, sadly, there are no deck views provided on these otherwise superb plans.
Will AJ Press publish a third volume that might have these needed earlier version deck views?
I am looking for a copy the Polish book Okrety Swiata 3 Japonski pancerniki typu "Nagato".
Can anyone help me to find this book?
I tried Abe Books and this book is on their search list but, so far, no luck.
Did this Okrety Swiata book have fold out deck views for the Nagato as first built in 1920 and in its first refit in 1931?
Thank you for any help you can give me in this search for the deck views.
Best regards,
Alain

Yes, last months of war, Nagato was a floting AA platform, as you can see the funnel and the main mast was cut down to clear arcs from AA and the battleship was painted in this camouflage pattern.Charlestonguy wrote:I have never seen this paint scheme on Nagato, is it accurate?Atma wrote:http://www.hyperscale.com/2009/gallerie ... 50hl_1.htm

Haruna, Ise, Hyuga, Tone, Myoko, Takao, Aoba, Kitakami and Oyodo was also painted that way.Well not exactly that way, each one had thier own camouflage pattern, there was not a standar one.
All that happend to heavy/light cruisers and battleships at the last 2 or 3 months of the war when there was no more fuel for the big ships and the Imperial Japanese Navy was ceased to exist.
Most of the ships during the last 3 months of the war was used as AA fortress, docked in the harbors of Japanese mainland. In shallow waters making them somehow unsinkable and the only way to silence them was with mass bombs droping.
Edit:Looking the pictures again I see the Harvey Low's Nagato lucks the 2 extra 12,7cm DP guns that was added on the boat deck on each side of the ship, at February 1945.

Re: Calling all IJN Nagato class fans
Aoshima's 1945 Nagato has the two mising DP guns in the boat deck btw.
Here is a link for the kit:http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10127417
Btw as I mentioned earlier in this thread Aoshima new 1945 Nagato has new parts for the Pagoda, funnel, main mast and new light/ Heavy AA guns, those parts are new and they dident apeared on the earlier release of Nagato from Aoshima. I bet they will be on too on the upcoming 1944 Nagato by Aoshima wich is for release at mid/late January.Still compared with Fujimi's 1/700 Nagato/Mutsu I prefer Fujimi's cause of the better detailed main deck and hull, also I think Fujimi's models are more accurate shaped and more crispy in detail

Well onwards to my next project:
http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/4909/nagato02.jpg
Well Im gonna build from Hi-Mold 1/700 turned stack Nagato to a Nagato as commissioning, so Im asking early in her career at 20's how many 3-inch (76-mm) single AA guns 4 or 2 ?
Well I can see 2 in that picture but maybe there was more.

Now with the 1945 and 1944 version of IJN Nagato, Aoshima offer the IJN Nagato in a 1942 version in waterline only mod this time.As you know with the previous two versions(1945 and 1944) Aoshima's IJN Nagato have new parts for pagoda, new main guns, new funnel, new main mast, new light AA and heavy AA.

The Nagato's ensign flag is for auction.
More than 67k for the ensign flag:
http://cgi.ebay.com/BATTLESHIP-NAGATO-E ... 27b359d8d1
fair price to ask, IMHO, if indeed is the genuine article. According to the lister, this is one of several that were taken from the Nagato at the time of its surrender, with the one that came off the deck currently residing at the Smithsonian.

Re: Calling all IJN Nagato class fans
According to Wikipedia:
"Nagato's Naval Ensign was taken by a commander of the US Navy. It was put on a Japanese TV antique appraisal show, "Nandemo Kanteidan", by his daughter, and broadcast on TV Tokyo in September 2005. The Ensign was valued at 10 million yen. After the show, the host, Kouji Ishizaka, bought the Ensign for 10 million yen and donated it to the Yamato Museum in Kure, Hiroshima in September 2006."

Hello IJN chums!
Jim Baumann here!
...
Have waded thru some of the excellent works of WW2 Nagato models .....
Now for a 1931 version!!!
further to my Dec 5 post earlier... the time has come....
I am shortly about to launch into a new build-- a bit of a departure for me in both era and nationality...
I am plotting to build the IN Nagato in 1/700 as in 1931- in her S-shaped funnel era
based on the Pit-road kit....
Being at heart a pre-dreadnougtophile... of mainly French, Russian, and KuK navies...
I am a bit light on IJN material...!!!
I have the profile Morskie booklet with the 1/400 scale(?) '31 plans--
I have no idea how accurate or not the drawings are per se ....
I am seeking photos of the vessel of that era as in 1931 or so....
anything- but anything is gratefully received and will be accredited!--
book reconsiderations? any monographs...?
please contact me at
