The Vladimir Monomakh in 1/700...

Post by JIM BAUMANN »

Having a temporary stall on my KuK Planet build due to needing a bit more info....

so as to keep the production and the momentum going ...,

-I thought I would build an easy, quick , precise and sharp modern Kombrig kit--WW1 RN..

--alas all my RN WW1 books, Burt, Trotter etc etc are lent out at the moment--and anyhow--I seem like doing things the hard way?? ..!?

so I got an older kit out of my stash......... :heh:

Now this model built some years ago by Vladimir Yabukov to show the ship as at the time of Tsushima with cut down masts...
http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery ... index.html
http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery ... index.html

Of course I want her with full sailing rig... :cool_2:
Vlad-mon-001.jpg
bit of background (from WIKIPEDIA)

The Vladimir Monomakh was laid down in 1880. She was originally equipped with a heavy full rig of sail on three masts and bowsprit. Completed in 1885, she was modernized in 1897-1898 with new armament, as her original armament was by then obsolete. A searchlight platform was placed atop the mainmast. As built on sea trials, the 5,593-ton cruiser reached 15.2 knots (28.2 km/h) but she was far slower 25 years later, despite the refit, as a result of overaged and worn out machinery.

During the Russo-Japanese war, Vladimir Monomakh was assigned to the Third Pacific Squadron, which was sent to reinforce Zinovy Rozhestvensky's Second Pacific Squadron. The Third Pacific Squadron was equipped with overaged warships and was unfit for in modern naval warfare despite the insistence of the Russian Admiralty. The Vladimir Monomakh was a quarter of a century old at the time of the conflict.

On May 27, 1905, at Tsushima, Vladimir Monomakh was positioned to the right side of the Russian line, guarding the fleet train and so avoided the pounding that the Second Pacific Squadron received. However, at nightfall, the Japanese torpedo boats engaged the Russians. Vladimir Monomakh, mistaking one of her attackers for a Russian destroyer, collided with the Japanese vessel and was later hit by a single torpedo. The damage was severe but her crew kept her afloat and her engines operational. The next morning, however, the cruiser was scuttled by the crew and sank at 14:30.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Firstly spent time and assessed differences and inaccuracies as far as I could ascertain ...

I wanted my gun apertures open, and had to move them and symmetrise the sizes according to photos from Navsource Russia...
Vlad-mon-010.jpg
Vlad-mon-011.jpg

To enable the apertures to be repeatable the same size and perfectly square I lined them with brass-cut from 1/350 handrail.
Vlad-mon-012.jpg

Having a large stock of PE helps as I could pick and choose the right size...
Vlad-mon-014.jpg

The closed in gun embrasures for and aft were also opened --as the deck would cover my 'freestyle' drilling.
Vlad-mon-015.jpg

The funnel and vent bases that ( wrongly) were cast level with the top deck in the kit had to be lowered, as well as the fwd conning tower removed-and the event base made smaller-with consequent making good of deck...
All 'Aztec' cast on staircases were also removed and the deck 'repaired' and re-scored.

The twin staircases for stairs fwd and aft down below were also opened up--as well as the large engine room skylight.
Vlad-mon-016.jpg
The deck also needed work- with parts being removed, slimmed down, and the whole deck being thinned at the edges,

The pilot house needed be moved aft on the bridge deck--so the deck was repaired with a previously removed section of resin deck to match!
Vlad-mon-017.jpg

The kit surface of the skylight was wrongly simplified with a few portholes--the real thing - according to my drawings-had two sets of hinged skylight hatches per side with 4 port-holes per hatch...

This was going to be tricky to make exactly right without a piece of custom relief etched PE!
I elected to represent the outer set of hatches open--and represented the 4 portholes per hatch with some fine mesh--with the hatches being cut from old stock 350 scale stairs.
Vlad-mon-018.jpg
The hull sides were a bit dished--so I removed the cast-on strake( neatly done but overscale and wrong profile)
This allowed me to pared away the resin with a blade to give a flat side and replaced the missing strake with some fine nickel silver wire.

After some paint on the deck and the new funnel bases made using CA -infused paper it started looking better

The new strake was much finer--and the case-mates now had a round profile with a completely flat bottom. as per photos
Vlad-mon-019.jpg
Vlad-mon-020.jpg

That is it so far... more progress soon!

You really are quite insane, Jim... this looks like yet another masterpiece in the making... dont you EVER slow down..? :-)

That rigging... I can almost see it now... breathtaking! :thumbs_up_1:

Thank you Bill!-- yes the rigging will be a pleasurable (!) challenge

I did a ship of a similar era a few years back!

and reckon I can improve on that now.. ?

hmnnn...we shall see!

HA! You did it! Working on three models at once ...

You really see room for improvement? What? PE-sailors actually walking around?

Happy modelling (on a very interesting model, btw.) ~ Olaf!

Yup, thats rapidly moving way beyond any level of insanity hitherto displayed by you, Jim - you see space for improvement over this breathtaking and to this old fumblefingers totally unattainable level of excellence ...

Now where are those knitting needles of Chrissies?

Ill sure follow this build, have already mentally filed some very helpful hints!

Best of luck and all the best from

small update:

a bit of cleaning up of glue on rubbing strakes and general fiddling about!

But the most significant progress today is the making and installation of the tracks for the broadside guns as fitted when she was built.

I made these of gunmetal coloured coper wire => would around a piece of appropriate size tubing to form a tight spiral.

This spiral was cut into a number of small circles.

These small circles were then cut in half to make semicircles.

These semicircles of wire were then squashed between the jaws of smooth-faced Jewellers pliers.
The process was repeated for each circle until they had a flat profile.

The one photo I have of Vlad M which shows a deck view with a portion of a gun track track leads me to believe the track rail and flange plate were quite substantial.

The effect is quite pleasing--I shall paint the tracks to dull down the starkness of the tracks,

more soon :wave_1:

Ha!!-- a short two months later I am back with a bit of progress...( got rather distracted by KuK TBD's...)

Well.... after staring at the model for what seemed eons in an attempt to remember whereabouts I was....

as usual I started by removing things!

I was dissatisfied with the big engine room hatches-- conceptually ok but still not good enough!

So... off they came. ...

I was dissatisfied with the flying bridge casting, even after making it thinner, it lacked some cutouts, and was the wrong shape in a number of areas and was consigned to the resin scrap box.

Having checked plans, renders and photos the flying bridge appeared to be quite thick--so I was able to use some evergreen styrene plank sheet, and cut a fresh deck. I made a paper template( folded in half for symmetry!)
Vlad-mon-023.jpg
`I cut it so as to incorporate the deck overhangs as per plan
Vlad-mon-024.jpg
The deck is supported by a large array of vertical supporting legs. These were drilled all the way through the hull and had brass wire dropped in from underneath the hull until they rested up against the underside of the deck.

Once the wires had been glued, they were snipped off with sidecutters and the legs bent around form spar deck level to as plumb and vertical as possible.
Vlad-mon-025.jpg
as yet the have not all had glue applied to the underside of the flying deck--as I am still adjusting some legs...

Although I had previously drilled out the kit's resin funnels--but I was increasingly unhappy with their shape and height! --so made all new funnel of copper and brass tubing.

On the real thing in the early years of full sailing rig the funnels were telescopic and could be lowered when the lower sails were set.
Vlad-mon-026.jpg
The little deckhouses and skylights have had their glass hatches added ( Wem brass 1/350 DKM hatches )
Vlad-mon-027.jpg
Vlad-mon-028.jpg
The main engine room skylights were re-built using the existing pieces--but passed through a candle flame so as to remove all the glue deposits and then re-assembled- but better this time
Vlad-mon-029.jpg
I have started on adding the boatskids, installed vents and funnels and they extraordinarily distinctive steam pipes.
The lower blockhouse has been made and installed, to be topped with a flying bridge and the oval conning tower.
Railings have been added around the flying deck and the project has gained momentum again... although there is a new small distraction in progress also... BFM coaster SS Pearl...

but that's another thread!

The current staus quo is below

The 6 and 8 in guns respectively had the aforementioned semi-circular tracks, and a very different shaped gun carriage, looking much like a recoil slide.

I based this on some photos of the type on similar ships.--as they are buried in the spar deck under an overhang the effect should be sufficient...( I hope! )

Quite tricky to make--and repetitive...- using NNT barrels,

L'arsenal; depthcharge racks and WEM PE boat cradles...
Vlad-mon-032.jpg
Vlad-mon-033.jpg

I need to make four more 6 in guns... ==> tomorrow !

Very good idea of the gun tracks, I remember seeing those on the HMS Warrior at Portsmouth, on a question - while I'll perfectly understand how you can cut a square hole, how are you managing to keep the darn thing errr ''square'' or as we would say - plumb - yes I know you assemble a frame around the outside, the question is, how do you stop wandering off and then having to correct these huge mistakes, I ask while cutting a doorway through a building (1-700) it looked awful, even with a frame LOL :heh:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Drill a small hole in each corner- drill a hole in the middle, and work outwards carefully from the centre hole with a very sharp blade.
The photos do show that I am not infallible and ended up inserting slivers of styrene ...

Meanwhile....

The ship is now mounted and at sea! :thumbs_up_1:

However to get there took a few steps....

Contemporary photos suggest I needed to have a VERY thin white line with a surprising amount of boot-to showing.

Not having the patience to mask, paint, re-mask and re-paint-- and feeling unable to get a REALLY thins and REALLY sharp white line using paint....

I resorted to my favourite method of red stripe over white...-using the tried and tested TC-decals from Germany
Vlad-mon-035.jpg
Vlad-mon-036.jpg
The ship was mounted to her base-plate using 3 x selftapping No 6 screws into the pre-drilled 3 mm holes
Vlad-mon-037.jpg
Vlad-mon-038.jpg
The underside was deep countersunk so that I could fine tune the ships sheerline using small washers
Vlad-mon-039.jpg

Scary pastime-- as I had to re-drill 2 of the holes ( in situ with the model affixed to her base!!!)
as the initially drilled holes were in grave danger of interfering with the small supporting column struts drilled for the flying deck.... :doh_1:

:doh_1:

The hammocks stowed along the midships bulwark were a bit of a dilemma-- contemporary photos show these to have a cover sheet- ( logical really...-- rain/sea-spray would make the hammock an unpleasant place to sleep for the crew)

But I rather liked the feel and slightly irregular look of the hammocks.

I elected to make lots of small hammocks of .20 thou styrene rod.

I then used white glue to homogenise the shape and create a cover 'sheet'.

I hope under paint it will look as I had envisaged....?

Don't hate me - that does look like red sticky tape with the edge showing white (the thickness of the tape edge), I am sure its just the angle of the photo.

sticky tape indeed.... ! :Mad_5:

The model is on the move... remaining 6 in guns have been installed and some of the hull surface detail has been re-applied

inc the corrected shape/size hawse hole plate made of paper
Vlad-mon-041.jpg

A lot of time was spend making the new flying bridge deck and even more time taken to apply the railings; taking care to ensure symmetrical stanchion placement so as to get stanchions on the corners...

a lot of cut and shut....
Vlad-mon-042.jpg
some very fine stair PE from an as yet unidentifed PE set I bought eons ago ( L'arsenal...? ) gave the stairs.

The ship is starting to gather it own character now

Looking wonderful Jim :thumbs_up_1:

Really fine and delicate... whose railings are those? GMM ultrafine? Or the new WEM ones?

Very very sharp...

so much for a quick build...

On the foredeck there were additional guns on semi-circular tracks
Vlad-mon-045.jpg
Vlad-mon-046.jpg
These were made of copper wire would into a spiral, cut and then flattened between two Stanley blades with a pair of pincers giving the compression.

The tracks are about 10% underscale--... but need to be so
==> otherwise all the other 'furniture on the foredeck will not fit!!

(this is probably caused by the bulkheads being overscale in thickness--something that I will watch out for on my next build.... )

also on the poop deck
Vlad-mon-047.jpg
Vlad-mon-048.jpg

The admiral walk stern railing was to give me some headache...
Vlad-mon-049.jpg
there was nothing remotely suitable in my ( quite extensive!)PE stash

Fortunately.... inspiration struck!

1991 GMM 1/600 Merchant ship PE in stainless steel chunky ( or ' classic' ) ratlines...

Truth be told I would have preferred something finer...--but I was unable to find anything remotely similar or usable...
--any ideas or suggestions are welcome-it is as yet neither painted or attached...

OK a bit overscale... but effective I reckon!
Vlad-mon-050.jpg

More soon... but..I have started something else as well

( ....all the chaps do it now! :wave_1: )

Thank you very much for all the tips and inspiration.

This is a picture of ESMERALDA in the Chiliean Naval Academy in Valparaiso. You can see how they used their hammocks as additional protection.

Well-- time to progress again with this vessel ...

Phew!!!

I will admit to having been distracted from progressing this model by two light Blue beauties...

one in 1/700 scale...

http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery ... index.html

Image

and restoring a new addition to the old car fleet...-- in 1/1 scale....
2011-03-01 1833.jpg
Meanwhile....

After spending 2 hours at my bench just staring at the model; trying to fathom where I was with the build 4 months ago....

I realized that I would have to add and make the Gun port flaps - for the embrasures I had depicted open....

Hunting high and low through my PE stash elicited nothing useful or repeatable..
Using my normal favourite method-paper-- was unsuccessful in this instance- the strips were very narrow and prone to curling... in addition as I wanted the inside of the flaps to have some texture

I ended up cutting some spare WEM RMS Queen Elizabeth liner PE boat interiors...

-- the thwarts had surface etched knees on the ends which worked well for giving some relief texture to the inside of the
gun-flaps

I also drilled for the inner part of the bowsprit and added a small access platform fwd--more next time...
