Re: Bismarck wooden deck
I started the work on my kit (Bismarck 1:350 Revell). Where is the correct place on this forum to show my WIP (Work in Progress)?

Hi Roy ~ Tirpitz wore two different paint schemes in 1943 and on both the larboard side was different to the starboard side.
Off hand, I don't know where to find plans or websites that do show the liveries correctly ...
Happy painting ~ Olaf!

Hi *Guest* ~ What makes you believe it was *steel* grating?`
Further back wood? Is there a known photo showing this? What does it mean? Planked like the main deck?
Then, the deck around/aft of the Admiral's Bridge is believed to have been steel, covered with wooden slatted panels.
Happy modelling ~ Olaf!

Re: Calling all DKM Bismarck & Tirpitz fans
Gentlemen
Please see why I am confused on this issue.
Revell kit has molded plank decks on admiral, with grating on forward open bridge and steel aft. Instructions say to paint both panzergrau matt 78 and grate the same. (See page 14-15 on instructions.)
AOS page 74 indicates wood plank on bridge deck and admirals bridge on page 71.
Most models have the grate painted dark wood.
I understood this to be steel deck with wood grate laid on top for water to flow off. Is this not correct?
Jim you say there is more information in "polish publications", what are they? Could you please post just one picture or give where I can get a copy of these books?
Thank you
Arthur

I studied the pictures of the wreak on the Hood/Bismarck website, what I see there the open bridge deck was steel/ meaning a wood grate could be there, no view of the admirals deck is possible now. I also found the aftmost gunnery control deck was in fact steel and not part teak plank and steel forward, like Tirpitz had.
http://www.hmshood.com/hoodtoday/2001ex ... /index.htm
Still like to see more photographs or documentation on these....thanks

Re: Calling all DKM Bismarck & Tirpitz fans
hey.. could be wrong on that one.
all my stuff is in storage, i have the revell kit 1.350 tirpitz, managed to check that out, and the admiral aft deck is planked on the kit,i have painted it that colour.but the open bridge i have painted grey.now i remember doin a lot of research in this area, even the builders yard plans dont show where the deck was planked. the colour scheme on the instructions are wrong.the polish books are documented on this site and john asmussens site but i dont think they are still in print . i dont know how to post pics sadly,i will try learn but all my books, plans everything is in storage.for sure there is a pic of that deck on Bismarck and its planked, the polish book shows large clear photos. try bundesarchive think thats right the same pics are on there.sorry if i misled you in any way.but i now aint sure about the aft deck.
For sure all grating was metal.and there was anti slip decking round the aa instalments .take care .

Type Schlachtschiff Bismarck in the search and enjoy. This should prove to be quite the cost-effective alternative for people who cannot find Joseph Kaiser's books.

Re: Calling all DKM Bismarck & Tirpitz fans
There were crated panels and slatted panels. I don't know about the latter (Admiral's Bridge and foretop gallery), but the crated ones where possibly of the float-away type in case the ship sinks. Judging from b/w photos (yeah, I know ...), those panels appear a tad darker than the teak deck. Maybe it depends on the lighting conditions or even the ship. The panels could have been more on the brown side, even when dry. I honestly don't know. Don't trust illustrations and models, even photos of the actual ship can be misleading.
I personally don't think that those wooden wooden panels received a coat of grey paint ...

Arthur,
This is the Polish book Jim is talking about:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss? ... &x=19&y=19
I recently bought a copy and I highly recommend it. Makes an excellent companion to the AOTS volume and to 'Schlachtschiff Bismarck - Das Original' which contains no less than 250 high quality detail pictures.

Thanks for the link, Darcy. To be honest, how much can we expect from a book when the cover already contains mistakes? Well, I don't have it, so I can't really judge it over ...

Had to go over the large file of photo's but did find the grated (or is it crated?)deck in one, the forward view of the open bridge. (please excuse my terminology, maybe wrong)
http://www.bild.bundesarchiv.de/dev06/b ... layout.jpg
I have not found anything past the open bridge area yet. Stand to reason they would continue with wood grating, with steel under for the whole deck.
I knew about the 3D book and have that on my list, didn't know that was the one Jim was talking about. Maybe Santa will be good to me this year.
I will continue the search, have time before I'm ready for that area. Will be finishing my Mini hobbies kit soon. I was using it as a test model so I could get it right on the Revell kit. I hope to start the Revell kit in the spring, already have the Lion Roar and Big Ed PE for it. Shame Lion Roar didn't include the depth charge racks, they had almost everything else.
Thanks guys for the help! Happy Holidays to all

Exactly what errors are you talking about? I happen to have a copy, so if you could point them out to me I'd be grateful.

Re: Calling all DKM Bismarck & Tirpitz fans
First of all, the ship appears as if the Baltic camouflage was just painted out. If the image does not depict the work-in-progress, then the dark grey bow (which should be darker) needs to be painted out. No problem, there are photos showing exactly this. But the boot-topping is too wide directly beneath the false bow wave and the dark bow. Both of them reached half-way down into the boot topping. The stem anchor shouldn't be there (if the ship is really portayed as it appeared for a couple of hours in Norwegian waters). I'm not quite sure about the green and red on the capstans, could have been just black and white as on other (but not all!) KM ships. The turret tops appear too dark, almost as dark as the dark grey boot topping (which is correct). The turret tops are believed to have been the same colour as the dark bow and stern (which appear too light here anyway). The antifouling could have been a bit more on the brown side, but that's just my personal preference. The difference in colour between the superstructure and the hull is not great enough - if there is any at all in this image, difficult to say from this angle of view. These are all not great issues, but those little things reveal if the research was done properly, I mean, if they can get it wrong, they can get it right, the just have to look at the common photos, I'm not talking about big secrets here.

Thank you very much for this elaborate response. I consider these to be minor errors. Indeed, the research should have been done properly. However, the 3D drawings are generally very good and useful nonetheless, regardless of these shortcomings. The book still makes for a great companion in addition to the AOTS volume on Bismarck and the excellent 'Schlachtschiff Bismarck - Das Original' by Josef Kaiser. As far as painting instructions go I'll stick to KBismarck.com and bismarck-class.dk. Both these websites provide all the necessary information on this subject.

Generally I would agree, however I'm dubious about most artiest renderings, facts seems to change as new sources are found, so with that I take all of them with an eye of skepticism.darcy wrote: As far as painting instructions go I'll stick to KBismarck.com and bismarck-class.dk.
