IJN Ship Color?

Post by costampede »

I have some books and they all say different things when it comes to the color of the IJN ships. I'm wanting to find out what everyone thinks is the correct color before I start painting.

The painting instructions for the kit say Dark Grey, but some reference materials say dark grey, and some say medium grey.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

The IJN used one basic, fairly dark grey, but each of the four major IJN navy yards used a slightly different and distinct variation on the basic color. So depending on where a ship was built/assigned/overhauled, the color varied over time. For a ship-by-ship list of what ship wore what color at what time, you need our publication, "IJN Greys":

You'll need either John's book or to go through the TROM's (Tabular Records of Movement) on this page to find the information; that's a large list.

Oh...and once you've established the base coat, weather heavily to lighten it. IJN by 44-45 is at such strain for resources/maintenance/manpower that most of their ships by the end of the war are described as 'slivery' grey from fading paint/wear.
