Out of the Eduard and the Gold Medal Models sets for the Hood, which is the better? I want to get the 1/350 kit, and don't have any experience with PE but would like to make a nice job of the kit.

I only have experience with the White Ensign PE set, but the HMS Hood Association website has reviews of most of the available aftermarket parts for this kit - not to mention a great article on how to correct the (few) errors in the kit and how to paint it. Invaluable!

I used both. Eduard has some good stuff. I was living in Prague at the time and got a good deal on it. I think they're to different to say which is better, as such. How's that for decisive? My Hood isn't done yet...still sticking on guns and rigging at the moment....lots of PE to go including (shudder) railings.

Hi everybody!

I'm a big fan of the Royal Navy in WWII and I'm planning on building the Tamiya 1/350 KGV and the Trumpeter 1/350 Hood!

As reference material for the KGV I was able to buy a copy of Ensign 1 KGV-class battleships. Since I think it's really good I'm thinking of also buying the Ensign 7 special on the Hood. Should I buy this one or is the Anatomy of the Ship on the Hood a better book?

Both are useful... In fact, there are loads of books out there on Hood and I could probably give you a good reason for most (which is why I have so many of them... cant resist them myself!!!)

I would go for the Anatomy book... and the Battlecruiser Hood by Bruce Taylor, but check out the HMS Hood Association site... By far the best reference on Hood anywhere

The outer most starboard hawse pipe was covered with a grill, you can see see on the wreck at the official HMS Hood site.

Yes, so there's no saying the others were covered. I choose not to add covers to those hawsepipes on my models as I only have one image showing them (loosely) fitted, while most images show none. Ooh, I have mine slightly wrong...

I have both LR and WEM sets and they are really good each for it's own reasons. Anyway, WEM provides 3 grills, only for the bow hawsepipes, and since there is at least 1 photo showing 1 used I decided I'll use it too. Haven't decided what to do with the rest 2 though.

If anyone is interested, the National Archives of Scotland have a bunch of really and truly amazing pictures of HMS Hood during her construction. You can view them here, however DO NOT BUY THEM FROM THIS SITE! This site is a for profit partner of the archives. The cheapest scan you could purchase from there is �10. You want to get them from the archives themselves. You can send an inquiry to them at WSR at nas.gov.uk. From the archives themselves, the cheapest scans they have are 50p, but you need to make it clear you are a modeler and will not be using them for profit. You will be asked to make a �15 deposit towards the work involved and as soon as they have your materials gathered they will send an estimate of the total cost. The �15 deposit will be deducted from the estimate. The deposit is non refundable so if you order less than that they will charge you �15 and keep the balance.

There are 99 images of the Hood under construction, during fitting out, and underway. Altogether they would cost �50. They also have some fine images of the HMS Repulse, HMAS Australia, HMS Barham, and HMS Tiger. There are even a few good ones of Ramilles, Jupiter, and Terrible to boot.

Reproduction quality is so-so, as they send you jpegs and the resolution is also not great compared to what I've received from other musea or archives. The previews give a good indication of what you get, but now only a bit better after ordering. However, at their low price, it is certainly worthwhile to order a few. I did not really learn much new in the late stage of my project, but they certainly would have been of great help were I to have them earlier!

I'm new to this forum. I'm building a Tamiya 1/700 Hood and need comments on their painting recommendations. Tamiya suggests XF-53, Neutral Gray, for the superstructure, and XF-25, Light Sea Gray, (a medium green) for the hull. Further confusing is the box illustration which shows the Hood superstructure in light green and the hull in light gray.

Royal Navy AP507B, bluish grey, has been advised somewhere - I hear that Testors Model Master FS 35237 Medium Grey is a close match.

Comments anyone ?

They are still more than most people in the US have access to. I plan on getting them to have as a general reference for British stuff later on.

I don't live in the UK and I have plenty resources (600+ pics plus lots of drawings), so I do not quite understand what you mean? People in the US can find the same material and people I have. Plus, the HMS Hood site has at least one American webmaster
