Well, the first photo does not show Bismarck, but gives an idea about the paint job of an Arado.

How did the porthole pictures solve your problem?

The 'aerial' photo ~ Not really unknown, but rarely seen ~ I see another debate about turret top colours coming ... :heh:

And ... (caugh, caugh) ... copyright?

Happy discussing ~ Olaf!

Looks like Bruno may have a cavas cover and what's hanging off the port side from a cable?

Dear Olaf,

As the Arado picture is published in the Schlachtschiff Bismarck - Waffen Arsenal number 75 I supposed that the picture was taken in the Bismarck. I put the text in one web translator (german to English) and I understood that the picture was really referring the Bismarck Arado. But German is Greek to me.

I was in doubt regarding the exactly number of portholes at starboard side, and that picture shows all clearly. If Im not wrong. The portholes pictures are from Bundesarchiv.

The aerial picture was published in one Brazilian forum, and there is no information regarding the origin/author.

Sorry for the copyright, but the laws in my country are different I will try to remember it in my future posts. :thumbs_up_1:

And I'm happy to start "another debate about turret top colours"

Dank!

Oh, no problem. The German caption says that Bismarck carried this type of floatplane. I may be wrong but the photo seems to show the main mast of Hipper in the background.

Canvas on turret Bruno ~ Nope, you wouldn't see the 'bolts' (what most people think are 'rivets') and the openings on the forward facing front of the rangefinder hoods.

Hanging off the port side from a cable? That frame-like structure hanging down from the yard under the searchlight platform? If I remember correctly, this is the 'Right-of-Way'-sign (lacking the proper term right now ...)
Or was it the sign for 'vessel restricted by draught'?

EDIT: A combination of both: A vessel that is restricted by draught has the right (of way) to use the deeper fairway. If this sign is hoisted on port side, oncoming traffic has to pass on stb side.

Happy guessing ~ Olaf!

The third picture kabelodeovo posted has an excellent view of hull rivets. Jumpy Bob had asked about that before, seems it had both in places, welded and rivets.
If you follow the rivet line upward, isn't that the area that split off at the time of the sinking?

Thanks Olaf for the info on the marker, I noticed on another picture it was on the starboard side.

Ok no canvas, so now what about Anton, three tone, or light reflecting?
Notice the cupola missing from bridge? I did a few searches today trying to find when that was added but all I found was a general time between March-May.

What are the light bands around the barrels of the main armament? It looks like maybe they have protective covers on.

I forgot to say that the aerial picture was taken in 07/03/1941 (d/m/y), at Canal Kaiser Guilherme, from Kiel to Blohm & Voss.... As my friend told me.

They were sleeves used for testing. You can read more here

Page down to RNfandan and Tommy 303 post for details.

Thanks to Antonio for that link. :thumbs_up_1:

I want to address the steel deck area again behind the open bridge one more time. I magnified the picture of 7 May 41 to focus on the deck in question. This looks like the area forward of the range finder station was 1. grated, or 2. painted light grey.

The area behind the range finder looks dark to me as if it were uncovered steel?

Any thoughts from anyone with a better source?

edit: Do we know for sure the grating was removed later in May 41?

Can somebody help me

I'm planing to paint my kit using the paint schema "1941 Operation "Rheinbung" (Part Three)"

Image

Image

Pictures from: http://www.bismarck-class.dk/bismarck/p ... ubung.html

Image
21 May 1941 at about 11:00 A.M. the Bismarck anchored in Grimstadfjord in Norway

Image
21 May 1941 the Bismarck and the Prinz Eugen left Kalvanes Bay... The different camouflage is noteworthy; only the white wave near the bow remains.
This picture was taken when the Bismarck passed Prinz Eugen about 9:00 P.M

Is it possible to paint and change the color of the ship in this interval???
I would like to see the comments because I'm not a Naval modeller and I wouldnt like to make mistakes in color on my very expensive kit!

Yes they did paint while underway.

Are you asking because you don't trust the photos you have posted?

Happy painting ~ Olaf!

I've dug out my Tamya Bismark after possibly 25 years im now 44 and I bought and made the kit when I was twelve.
what I've done is striped the pant of all the components, but needles to say so much has deteriorated over time and so many parts lost. curiously before i started striping the paint I was amazed at my reasoning and ability at twelve having not seen this model since then. the modeling world was a different place pre computers as iv discovered with what is currently available on the market and lets not mention the price I saved for a year to get it.and back then it cost me $120 AUD
now what Im asking is advice on parts and how to proceed in this endeavor.
please dont tell me to just buy a new kit. nostalgia!

I got kind of an odd question. I'm currently working a revell 1/350 Bismarck, but I'm not doing a normal build, I'm building the main wreck site of Bismarck. I want to be as true to the wreck site as possible. Can anyone tell me where I can get tons of reference photos of the wreck? Ive currently got James Cameron's Expedition Bismarck, Robert Ballard's book Bismarck, and know of this website http://www.bismarck-class.dk/bismarck/b ... _menu.html. Is there anything else out there I can pick up?

Honestly if you buy all the aftermarket parts required you will spend more than a new kit. But if your looking for AA weapons only you can get those from Eduard. Very nice set and easy to build. If you need more than that try ebay....

Thanks, that definitely helps a bit! Glad to know there isn't a giant gaping hole on the port side catapult as I was just about to put that in. Cant really fix that once its done. :heh:

Dana I always wonder. How do you propose to show a model of something 3 miles down that is in inpenetrable darkness?

Well that's the fun part. I was planing on possibly, once the model is finished and set in a fake sea bottom slide scar, filling the model in a cube of dark blue acrylic. so, left be, you cant make out too much detail outside of the main shape of the ship but when you shine a light on the acrylic it would light up the section of the wreck you have it over. I'm still not too sure on that one though, there's a few issues I'm not to sure on how to fix though, like air bubbles stuck in the acrylic when it's setting would obviously ruin the effect.
But first things first, I need as many reference photos/video of the wreck as I can get. For instance I have almost no reference of amidships where the funnel and hangers are. What little photos and video I have cant be all that exists obviously, I just don't know where to get or who to contact for more reference from the dives.

at least I think that's what you were asking. :newbie:
