Does anyone have any photographic evidence confirming whether or not the cruiser in the background of this photo is Savannah? Process of elimination leaves me with that conclusion, but I have seen no other photos of Savannah in 12 mod...:

I got a lot of help the other day, and I thank you all for that. What I need now is some clear pictures or drawings of the midships searchlight trestle. Most of the pics don't show it clearly. Can anyone help on this,as well as what type of spotter/float plane did she carry? the pics I got are good, but, the plane was to obscured to enable me to figure what type it was. Any help would be appreciated. commodore4

Just so you know, since Savannah was a Brooklyn class, the questions regarding her should be posted in the Brooklyn/Helena class thread. The previous thread has been merged with the Brooklyn/Helena thread, and it is there that the info is now placed.

As for the scout plane, from the Navsource photos it seems she was still using the SOC Seagull in 1944, but had changed to the SC Seahawk by war's end. Depending when exactly you are modelling the ship, you can decide on which one.

Most of the war was SOCs, but to nail it down we need to know what time period you're building.

What do you need to know about the midships searchlight platform?
Are you building a model kit of Savannah? If so, almost every kit I can think of in either 700 of 350th scales has a p/e searchlight platform; hence no need for drawings. I have some Brooklyn CL side view drawings, but they're pre-war. Happy to share these. I do have one wartime side view of Nashville; if this helps at all.
Here is a cropped jpeg of 1944 Nashville's midships area....taken from a profile morskie book.

Sorry I don't have any drawings of Savannah specifically.

I was thinking about off-loading my 96 Coontz DLG stuff in favor of a Brooklyn hull and plans.
CL's are pretty big in 96th scale; don't know if the wife would go along with this!!

Hi Guys I am working on drawing up a 1/72 scale USS Phoenix and will be going through the various threads looking for where to find reference info since I am new to ships and not sure where to look.

I am drawing it up in Solidworks 3D cad program first then scratch building it. right now I am having probs with the stern as I havent seen any great shots of it. I got drawings from George Goff and the stations arent very accurate and so been adjusting them. I know where it starts angling up to the transom at the stern according to his drawings the side goes from a nice radius to a knuckle to a radius again with a flat underside. but it doesnt look right so I been trying to get a good closeup of a model or the real thing showing the area. from the pics I have seen at weird angles and a distance it almost looks radiussed through that rear section.

as for the year I dunno yet as I have just started. It will for sure be after Pear Harbor when they added all the AA stuff. I just need to find out what they added and where.I know from one pic with mac arthur on it they had at least 1 quad Bofurs. I want to do it in the configuration with the most armament when she was most active in the pacific.

Hi Guys,
If you're drawings are no good, don't use them. You'll be correcting to eternity, and correcting against what?
I have a drawings source, but it's well protected. I'd advise Floating DryDock if you have not already. Good drawings will mostly help with external dimensions, so your hull profile, deck and s/s will be sound. Also, if you're doing a 3D model, then you really need hull lines and docking plans.
Start out at navsource for period pics. Unfortunately, the caption dates are subjective. The most AAA would be towards the end of the war. Also, at the bottom of navsource's CL-Phoenix page, there will be a link to her DANFS report; which will help you with yard periods.

thanks I am just trying to learn how to loft up a hull so its good practice even if it is not acurate for now it helps me learn how to loft the stuff up til I can find some good drawings.

Helen has the same hull, even though the s/s was modified from the earlier Brooklyn's. The Helena and St.Louis were sometimes referred to as the St.Louis class.

I just sent an email off to Floating drydock. I see they have the nashville and it says they are like TFW drawings whatever that is so I asked for clarification on whats in the drawings if there ia hull lines and station lines. they really should have a page showing a sample of the diff type plans and the quality. One thing I have noticed in the ship world is the quality of a lot of so called drawings look more like freehand stuff than nice drawings. maybe im spoiled from the aircraft field I been in for the last 40 odd yrs but for me trying to find quality ship drawings has been tough.

PS thanks for the pics from the look of it the knuckle looks to be more of a rounded corner than a sharp corner, but my ships eye havent matured yet so i may not be seeing it correctly
