Yes, the Soviet ships didn't look like they were designed. They looked more like they just happened. "We can hang a missle here, a gun there and lets have lots of radar masts." I can't say much for the newer ships. However, this one is a definite improvement over earlier Russian ships.

we are all waiting to see kiev in the gallery. On your new build is it going to be static or a working model,I have very little knowlage of russian ships .could you tell me a few facts on her,when built,tonnage ,length etc,etc,.I will be following your build with great intrest

Hi Les Yes this design is a real departure from the likes of the Krivak or even the Kara and Kresta .
I was toying with the idea of building a Kresta class but the opportunity came along 12 months ago with this one and I was hooked.

Hi Russ as a precursor to the build I will introduce the Steregushchiy and a new thread save to say at this point it will be a working model. In fact I hope to get the Kiev commissioned , on the water this coming Sunday at our Ship Model Society meeting . I am just keeping my fingers crossed that the weather is calm and sunny ???

Hello Dave, Looks like you are reaching the end of the carrier build. It looks superb, and I look forward to seeing the final shots of her. Your new project looks very interesting. I shall be watching. I am in the process of building another Escort Carrier, CVE-60, the USS Guadalcanal and a DE, the USS Pillsbury, DE-133, for the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Ill. Both will be on the same waterline configureation, side by side. The wave action will be somewhat of a challenge. They wanted this exibit by June, don't know if I can pull that off. Lots of work in a short span of time. In any event, good luck on your new projects, I am sure they will be top notch as always. Hope you are well. Tell ARH I said hello and I wish him well. Bill W.

Hi Bill Good to hear from you The final shots of Kiev are yet to be taken .I just hope I can get the model on the water this Sunday but the real hurdle is yet to be faced getting the model in a case and off to it�s new home. . Wow that time table you have for building the USS Guadalcanal and the USS Phillsbury is really challenging and to have them both in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry is a supreme accolade. This not only says so much about the models but also about the skills of the builder. Given very tight build period I trust you will find the time to get some pictures onto the site I really don't want to miss these. Question all the models you have built have had a connection is there a similar connection with Chicago and the Guadalcanal and Phillsbury ? I'm looking forward to starting the new projects but first job that needs to be done once the "slip way" is clear is to sort out the workshop , and give the walls a coat of fresh paint!!!

Well , enough for the moment regarding my next project and back to Kiev. As mentioned there are or where quite a number of outstanding jobs in the fixing department that needed my attention . One of these was the rigging. For large scale model such as Kiev { small scale if your building at 1:72!!} the need for rigging that does not give the impression that it is used for mooring the ship is not so pressing a problem . Non the less I asked the great man himself Jim Woods what he used and he went one better and presented me with a reel of very fine 11pound nylon fishing line { never thought of that before we live and learn}.

Most of the halyards are from the yards extending from the funnel casing and terminate at a lower platform . This can be seen here . There are other type of rigging with the dreaded spider or spacers and extending from the main Top Knot tower { these have yet to be made , need to pluck up the courage to string these out. }

The next big job was to install all the RAS fittings to the outboard side of the superstructure and here are the results of that exercise .

One last job that created some headaches as I could not get the panels how I wanted them to be was the 4 Rum Tub ESM quadrants at the top of the superstructure , Bell Nip has yet to be fitted . But that�s it for this session I really do hope that the next pictures will be those of Kiev at sea

Hi Norberto Thank you your comments are appreciated . I'm working on the transportation stand for Sunday , I have just completed the display stand which will be Kiev's eventual base within the case .

Hi North Sea It is quietly satisfying that modellers like yourself enjoy and hopefully gain from trawling through so many pages on Kiev , yes 95 , it's a more than I ever thought possible. As for keeping it going well I need a change and to a model not so big. To be honest I am pleased and thankful that this mammoth project is drawing to an end I have enjoyed every minute but it has to finish one day .

Hi Roel not only am I preparing to "put to sea" but the eagle eyes of the great man will be there as well. There are a number of small outstanding tasks that need to be carried out before I can put this project to bed so to speak. These are not all necessary for Sunday but need to be cleared away in the next three weeks. I am already biting at the bit to get the next build underway on a brand new ship and as far as I am aware no working model of the ship exists However the build on Kiev hasn't quite come to a close I have just started to construct this piece of deck housing. I have no idea what it is used for but it has to go in.

I have made mention over the past months that Kiev will be going to a new home well I can now reveal officially that the NEW home is in fact the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yoevilton . The date for the hand over is now confirmed as the 19th of February .

Thanks you John The FAA Museum is such an amazing place , I've never seen all that is on available to see but the mixture of full size naval aviation and models just takes your breath away and that's only part of the whole experience.
