Okay, another question. Where the teak decks met the barbettes the was a ring of sorts around them acting as a grommet. What was that, wood, steel or linoleum? Should it be deck color or the same as the barbette?

Can anyone tell me how USS Arizona, or any battleship, would have been tied up to a mooring quay at Pearl Harbor. I would expect there to have been some sort of fender between the ship and the quay, but I can't see any in the pictures. Would there always have been a gangway down to the quay from the ship? Lastly, can anyone tell me the number of the quay that Arizona was tied to on Dec. 7th? I have heard that Nevada (next in line) was at F-8, so perhaps F-9 or F-7?

Since The ship was tied up to the mooring berth next to Ford Island, the men would leave via tenders for shore leave.

"Fox" in this case refers to a berth and not a Quay... so F8 and F9 each had two Quays. I believe there's a post very early in this thread talking about the mooring lines.

I paid 65.00 for mine about a year or so ago. Amazon will sometimes have used copies for less, have to keep looking.
One thing I dislike about Stillwell's book drawings is the fact they are split between two pages, with the fold in the middle. Hard to see all the areas midship.

Two things in this world know no bounds: human greed and stupidity. Greed because somebody thinks they can charge that much for it. Stupidity because, unbelieveable as it may seem there's going to be somebody willing to pay that much.

You know, it makes you wonder... Not even a month ago they were 165- 250. Then THIS conversation started up and now the prices are ridiculous. And they are too, because unless someone's cornered the market and has them all, copies will keep surfacing.
I actually read a good portion of it on Amazon preview, so I'm satisfied i would not buy it as I just need technical info.
There was one section tho that was all new to me. The whole part about the salvage operation after the attack. There's a great picture of a massive derrick barge lifting the tripod mast off the wreck. Available at Alibris for $ 950.00. Get 'em while they're hot.

Changing course again, does anybody have either a photo or a drawing of the general layout of the navigation bridge from the 1930-1941 time frame? I saw the plans in Stillwell's book but they're too primitive.

Had a look at the photos and must say I can't see any improvement over any of the PE sets already available on the market today. In fact I think I even spotted a few errors.

I suppose it'd be a matter of "if the price is right" - like their other sets, it does come with brass barrels, so that might change some things.

Yes, but when they had the chance, why not make a larger set with lots of resin parts to correct all the missing and incorrect parts in the kit, e.g. all the different size mushrom ventilators (20+ of them), the five skylights and the large deckhouse missing on "boat deck", etc. As the set looks right now according to their web site, it looks like a job half done. You're still left with a h*ll of a lot of scrath building to do. Or perhaps an "Ulimate Arizona set" will follow later?

I have a piece of the Arizona that was made available from the Navy League of Hilo some years ago. It was taken from the wreckage that is stilll stored across the Harbor on on eof the points.

How much would that be worth on the open market? Not that I would ever sell it !!!!

trying to get a piece for our Legion post here in Florida as we have a good number of PH survivors living in the area. One of our members was on the Pennsylvania and another on the Trevor. As of yet I haven't heard from the powers that be. I hope it will come to pass. I know that they are afraid of artifacts ending up for sale .

Today being the 25th anniversary of the Challenger disaster, it was mentioned in a news article that only 50% of the shuttle was ever recovered, and small pieces still sometimes wash ashore in Florida to this day. It was mentioned that possession of either Challenger or Columbia debris is a crime. No offense to anybody, but IMHO possession of Arizona artifacts that date back to December 7th ought to be the same way. Something removed from the ship years before probably wouldn't be an issue, but anything salvaged from the wreck itself to me is akin to grave robbing.
