This is beautiful work I have great admiration for modellers working entirely in timber which can be both malleable yet onthe other hand unforgiving. I use timber but this is at an altogether different level. I am fascinated by the type of timber you make use of as it is such a fine grain. I make some fittings out of �Jelutong� which is a good pattern makers timber or occationally obechi both of which are good to work with and very stable . Other timbers are lime , box and bass woods which I like for deck and hull planking . UK master model builder Jim Woods builds all his models hull , superstructures , fittings from timber and will not incorporate any styrene as he is fully aware that this material is inherently unstable , models of which require a stable enviroment for storage . But like yourself can work even the finest detail into the model much of it in timber.

Hi Dave!
Thank you! your kind replies. The raw timber is very difficult to work.
It is unstable in environmental condition especially it's dry or wet.
It has cracks,twist,bend.....depend on above.
I use the 'Ginko' more than 3-4years drying periods.
It is difficult to make hull in whole solid.
Small fittings are easy from environmental condition.
The other is 'Bamboo' for rigging and life line...
What is the 'obechi'?

Hi J K Song Obeche is a moderate grain timber of West African origin. It has properties ideal for the model maker particularly when considering making up a hull using a system of build which is aptly described as �bread and butter� construction. The advantage for the model maker is that it is broadly a stable timber, malleable and easy to work with a reasonably close grain but needs to be well sealed if being used near water. The disadvantages in the strength but there is more than enough for forming model ship hulls.

Oh this is good. Working the shape of the stack is no easy task at the best of times , even with the most forgiving materials but your working of the funnel casings is a tutorial and the end result speaks volumes. Question what grades of abrasive paper you use. Do you make use of any form of mini power sanders? I find I have to work any timber out of doors and still wear a dust mask. Many thanks for posting .

I use #100~150 sand paper for making shape and # 300~350 for finish.
I have hand tools only for sanding and don,t wear a mask.

hello j.k.song.you always amaze me,your work with wood is very skillful.i never see any wood filler in any of your carving.if it was me there would be lots of pieces in the garbage and lots of filler fixing slip ups.
