Calling all Oliver Hazard Perry-class FFG fans

Hello,

Does anyone know of any plans that show the underwater layout of the Perry class sea chests and various intakes/outlets? Or, even better, have photos showing the undersides? I've seen photos of various ships in drydock and, while they show the side of the hull below the waterline, they don't show the underside enough to be able to discern the appearance and location of the intakes/outlets.

Who's Building a Perry, let's start a list of our Projects.. so maybe we can bounce ideas of each other? Ill' start

Building:
1/700 Dragon OHP Long Hull, will be USS. McClusky FFG-41 2002, built out of box with Dragon Railing (first PE project) and decals from Resin Shipyard.
1/350 Academy OHP Long Hull, will be USS. Carr FFG-52 2003, Built Out of Box with probably GMM PE and decals from resin Shipyard.

I've got a 1/700 DML Perry on the bench as well. She'll be the USS John A. Moore (FFG-19) circa 1991. I'm using the GMM Modern USN/JMSDF set and GMM and DML decals. She's currently ready for decals on the decks and hull. After that I'll start assembling the masts and weapons.

If you're build the Academy 1/350 I highly suggest you grab one of WEMs PE sheets for this kit. It is PERFECT for all Perrys! Run you around $30 or so with the current exchange rate.

I am currently building DML 1/700 Ingraham as USS Reuben James (FFG-57) and Academy's 1/350 OHP, also as FFG-57. Will try to post some pics, though I have not made alot of progress to date. I am making a 1/700 Lincoln CSG diorama, which the James was a part of when I served on her.

Hi all,

I am busy at the moment completing the details on the bulkheads. It is very easy to do, but it is necessary to be very careful to make room for everything that has to be set in place. They are at the moment like this :

The derricks over the flight deck and the signaling for landing are like this :

And this was my solution :

The derricks are fallen down for lack of glue, but will be erected when set in place.

The satellite aerials are the specific for F81 Santa Mar�a in Fall 2006, and they are far different from the rest of the frigates of the squadron, which hace the shape of a match. This is what has to be reproduced :

And this was my solution :

The base is Evergreen tubing, and the aerial cover is made with a piece of thick sprue, filed and sanded to match the base diameter. Very tiring, but not difficult at all.

Up to now I used to make thyem with rod, using a stretched sprue ring to simulate the lenses, but this time I thought I clud try something else, so I used Evergreen tubing reopening the hole with a drill, and closing the back with a buttom made with molten rod as well. The first set was not very brilliant, so I discarded them and made a new set, like this :



I will simulate the lenses with a drop of gloss varnish.

Absolutely fantastic construction. I do not understand how you accomplish these little, itty, bitty details. It is amazing. Thank you so much for posting your in-progress pictures. How you photograph and display what you have is very instructional.

Dave, thanks a million for your kind remarks on my very humble work.

One of the trickiest elements are the manouvre lights on the bulkheads on main deck. They are not very visible, but they have a quite complicated shape. They are these lights, marked with red arrows :

After thinking for a while, the solution was surprisingly simple : Evergreen o.88 mm. rod, heated to make a rivet, flattened with sandpaper and cut to a half mm. of the head, set in place on a piece of Evergreen angle, cut to half in one of the sides, like this :

I was very happy with this simple solution.

Hi all once more,

One of the friend modellers in the Spanish forum made a remark saying that too bad the ship�s heads are not visible, because he would like to see how I would negotiate the toilet paper.

Well, what has to be reproduced is well-known, so we do not need to get into details...
The truth is that I didn�t make a pic of this element when I was onboard the Santa Mar�a, so I had to use the model I have at hand -- you know what I mean.

What I was able to reproduce is this :

The leaf of paper is a little plastic chip of Evergreen as well. The paper stand and the paper roll are a bit too oversized, but at scale 1/300 one does not have to be too fuzzy so-and-so, so I have to say very clearly the paper is NOT double tissue...

No, actually it is a slightly bigger scale : 1/300. This is the Lee model, not very good, to say the least.

Willie, you definately know how to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. I'm looking forward to the day when you tackle the 1/144th Fletcher. Not that it's a sow's ear. But, there's still room for you to make a museum model out of it.
