Hello Bob.

I feel really picky about this, but you have asked for comments & criticism, & I would be remiss to deny your request, so....

On the photos you posted of the Pop Group sensors, there is a flat top located at the 12 0`clock position on the outer sensor. On your (bloody good & miles better than those included in the kit), they appear perfectly circular. This may be a trick of the photos, but just in case.....

Otherwise......Yeah, s`alright, I guess.

That's a quantum leap from your last update, Bob. Great job! Your attention to detail is first class. I've been noticing all along that your fitting and application of the deck railings is very precise. The curves are perfect, angles sharp and all openings where they should be.

You're welcome, Bob. I used to work in a shop that made steps, railings and other things of that sort for buildings, and I guess my eye just gravitated towards those familiar looking shapes and designs.

Can't imagine why you'd want the manual focus. OK one of the pics isn't quite sharp, but the last one is sharp enough to see all your excellent work! I doubt there will be any more accurate model than yours!

This is far from a straight forward model and you have rose to the challenge to do this awesome ship justice in model form .. Keep up the good work it's inspiring to many on the scratch build board especially those building the Kirov class of ship . Add to that the deep interest and accumulated knowledge base in the Kirov you undoubtedly have which is proving of great assistance to those building in the larger scales this is what model making is all about. As a matter of interest my own camera is a Canon G9 .

Having followed your amazing Kiev, I'm honored that you would look at this build. I appreciate it very much. As you allude to, I'm blown away by the routine examples of encouragement and assistance that everyone on this forum provides for each other.

I did a quick check and, if I read the description correctly, your camera is an autofocus? Obviously, you don't have any focus problems since your photography is uniformly excellent. Do you do anything special besides aim and click?

Hi Bob you are very welcome. As for the camera I try where possible to compose the picture, introduce plenty of light and set to auto /macro, with flash off. The G9 is particularly versatile as the focal length can be reduced down to mm. I do have a bipod stand but this is seldom used in macro { with the exception of Telford IPMS then I will go over to manual ] only for telephoto .I undertake a fair many "walkabouts" on the full size warships mainly for the magazine and it is here that the G9 comes into its own . Before that I used the G5 and I just like the easy to carry, easy to use and easy to stow characteristics of the G series that attracted me to them in the first place. Another advantage is in the reproduction values across the colour spectrum, once again the G9 lives up to its original hype. I believe times and cameras have moved on I know the G14 is available and perhaps now a G 20? Amazing little cameras but they do retail almost as much as a good digital SLR a point worth considering but others will of course get the best out of their own set up. Jim Baumann�s for one has his technique off to a fine art. Hope this helps .

I'm using the Nikon D70, an oldie by now, she's around 5 or 6 years now and she's having quite some trouble nowadays. I'm using it for bird- and nature trips as well and there, although an SLR, she's having a lot of trouble focusing. I can't remember she had that before, so perhaps it's something caused by age. The Macro focus is pretty good though, and for still things, like a model as well as ship walk arounds she's still very good. I will buy a new one soon though, something smaller and easier to carry, nowadays you can even get a good zoom on the small ones as well.

OK....going to ask a stupid question.


What color are the decks supposed to be on modern Russian ships? I have a few kits here, Dragon, Skywave, Trumpeter, and they all say something different, anything ranging from Orange to Insignia Red, all of which I believe would be wrong.

To me they look more like a Red Brown, just wondering what you guys think would be the right color?? Would like to start one of my Russian ships...but that color eludes me.
