That will be a great project, Jim. I believe the KMM volume on IJN BBs has several good photos of Nagato in this rig, but I'll check.
Here's 2 shots.

Re: Calling all IJN Nagato class fans
Jim, I took a look at my references. Most of what you need is out of print but, if you can find them:
The aforementioned KMM volume on IJN BBs has two abeam photos of Nagato and one of Mutsu that are very good.
Gakken #15 has several very good photos, along with a two page spread shot taken in close of the area around both funnels in this configuration - an amazing detail shot.
Model Art Ship Modeling Special #4 has some very good 3D plan drawings of her bridge and aft superstructure in this timeframe.
Maru Special # 1 has many good photos in the is timeframe.
I'm not sure if I have the same Profile Morski as you, mine is the original but, I think it was reissued as a two volume set. Might be worthwhile.
THis photo from the Takagi 1930s album

Dear Friends!
First of all THANK YOU
for all your off-line responses and images etc etc
It really is a GREAT community -- of knowledgeable and helpful people!!
I really appreciate it.
I intend making a start in the near future while my present two project reach fruition ( paint dry time! )
so.... again--bear in mind I am not IJN familiar .. therefire forgive the basic questions...
Colour of these ships at this period...?
These images from the Japanese digital colorist
http://blog.livedoor.jp/irootoko_jr/ ( all 89 pages of it )
suggest a grey that I would interpret in Humbrol as being close to H 64
your thoughts...?

According to Nihon Kaigun site and to IJN Nagato's TROM"
Late 1924 to March 1925:
Kure. The top of the fore funnel is swept back.
So Kure Grey, Jim.
Edit:Just for the records, IJN Mutsu at that time period was Sasebo Grey.

That bottom shot of Nagato looks like it was taken yesterday! Top notch colorization and many praises to the artist

Re: Calling all IJN Nagato class fans
Regarding IJN greys - there are 4 known formulations: Kure Grey, Yokosuka Grey, Sasebo Grey, Maizuru Grey. IJN "Grey" is a darker than medium grey tinged with blue. Kure Grey is probably considered the ubiquious version, compared with Yokosuka showing a little more green, Sasebo darker, Maizuru a little lighter and closer to a neutral grey.
There are also several unknown variations from private yards (Mistsubishi, Kawasaki, Uraga, etc.) that are probably very close to the official greys.
I don't know that i would get too hung up on the exact shade unless you are modeling a specific date. So many things impact color - weathering, sun, time between refits, yard for refit, the availability of mixes at a yard, etc. While Nagato was built at Kure, and would have certainly been coated with Kure grey at her completion, you would need to get a listing of her movements and various yard visits between 1924 and 1934 to pinpoint an exact shade.
The colorized versions above of very nice, but one must remember that they have been colorized with best guess estimations as to time and place.
Don't know about Humbrol colors but S&S has issued the IJN color chip chart to use for matching. WEM, Gunze, and Tamiya (Kure and Sasebo only), among others, make paints to match.

If 64 is the Humbrol color you used on your Dreadnought, it's too "green". You want something more "blueish"JIM BAUMANN wrote:

your thoughts...?
WEM has the correct colors in their line...if you are going to use Humbrol, why not get the correct shade from WEM?

Tamiya also has a nice line of Japanese Grey used by all the major shipyards.

Re: Calling all IJN Nagato class fans
Jim you shall "cannibalize" the IJN Amagi from Fujimi in 1/700 by the way. It has a better casting/detail for the single barrel AA guns and the boats are much better in detail compared to Pit - Roads.JIM BAUMANN wrote:Hello IJN chums!
Jim Baumann here!...
Have waded thru some of the excellent works of WW2 Nagato models .....
Now for a 1931 version!!!
further to my Dec 5 post earlier... the time has come....
I am shortly about to launch into a new build-- a bit of a departure for me in both era and nationality...
I am plotting to build the IN Nagato in 1/700 as in 1931- in her S-shaped funnel era
based on the Pit-road kit....
Same with the searchlights.

Yes, Jim. Hold your fire until details and release information available. Certainly a less expensive base to work off of. Details lkely to be good, IMHO.

Judging by the re-re-tooled IJN Nagato('s) released recently by Aoshima, I think it will be very good detailed.Dan K wrote:Details lkely to be good, IMHO.
