Schiffsbodenfarbe III Rot 5

Post by kubaro »

Can anyone give me the colour match of Tamiya/Gunze (ref... %...... etc) of the Schiffsbodenfarbe III Rot 5, used on down waterline hull, of the DKM ships?

Since WEM has this colour temporaly out of stck, im looking for substitutes.......

Thanks in advance...

As far as I know there is no match from Tamiya, can't speak for Gunze. Beside WEM, there are other manufacturers selling this particular colour, e.g. Lifecolor or ModelMaster (or Testor's?). I never tested the latter two/three, so I don't know how they compare to WEM (which is a good match to Revell's discontinued #383, which was - if I recall correctly RAL 8015 - close, but not the holy grale of 8013). In my personal opinion, and I include scale effect in my deliberations, Revell's #37 is good for 1/350, if you like the paint a tad more on the dirty side, Humbrol #70.

Five years ago I contaced the German RAL Institut. They told me the closest match is in their RAL DESIGN range. The number is 040 30 30 - which are the CieLab values. If you run this through a conversion software, you can get RGB values (or whatever) to have a look at it on your computer screen. I know, different conversion software solutions produce different results, which then look different on every screen - but it can be helpful to get an idea what it should look like. The one I used gave me RGB 140-65-43, which is by far lighter than the WEM colour, but to me it looks close enough to what I see on old colour photos or Bismarck wreck photos - both sources should be taken with grain of salt, but they match 'my' personal image of that colour ... (which means, whatever you select, it should look good to you)

Happy painting ~ Olaf!
