Re: Calling all IJN Kongo class fans
Just curious but how is Hiei pronounced?

From her reconstruction in 1939, IJN Hiei did she received any minor upgrades, for example additional AA etc. till her sinking by a combination of gunfire and aircrafts in 1942 ?

Re: Calling all IJN Kongo class fans
I may have an old Fujimi 1:550 kit of Hiei to work with soon, can anyone give me a quick assessment as to its overall accuracy, and in what period this model aims to depict the ship?
Hiei is the one ship of its class for which I had the most potential modeling interest, as the test bed for the modern tower bridge, and am wondering if this older kit meets that requirement? Rajen's list has no detail info on this kit.
TIA

I'll check Ishibashi for changes but, I don't think there were any, save possible aircraft.

Re: Calling all IJN Kongo class fans
Im guessing she might have lost her 13 mm AA gun on main bridge. But that is just a guess.

Re: Calling all IJN Kongo class fans
The Ishibashi BB book shows illustrations for Hiei in 1934, 1940 & 1941.
The only difference between the '40 & '41 version appears to be the addition of wind baffles at the uppermost bridge level, plus the addition/enlargement or improvement of the AA command position on top of the bridge tower (plus what might be wind baffles). The quad(?) 13mm high on the bridge tower are still in place. HTH.

Re: Calling all IJN Kongo class fans
I was looking the turrets of IJN Kongo class battleships and I notice that both Aoshima and Fujimi got for every ship an individual turret shape, each ships has its own variation on the turret's roof.
Different arrangement of various small stuff, for example dual training devices on IJN Hiei - Fujimi model - while IJN Kongo its "clean" in 1/350, by both Aoshima and Fujimi.
Also notice that Fujimi is giving two shapes for the rangefinders one for 1/350(same as Aoshima's IJN Kongo in 1/350) and for 1/700. The 1/350 is like the IJN Hiei in 1/700, that means rather than one piece, the rangefinder is interupted by a spoting device. While in 1/700 the rangefinder is one piece.Wich one is correct ?
On the other hand, Fujimi has the same turret for both 1/350 and 1/700 IJN Haruna's turret, while Aoshima for her 1/350 Kirishima got a tottaly different turret. Some details from IJN Haruna's turrets are missing.
I was under the impression that IJN Haruna's nad IJN Kirishima's turrets was exactly the same.
The only differenfe that I know is that IJN Kongo and IJN Hiei had square face turrets and IJN Haruna and IJN Kirshima round ones.
Any other difference ?
Any drawings/pictures of the turrets ?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Calling all IJN Kongo class fans
That's a lot or research. Fujimi/Aoshima may or may not have generalized on some points. I'm not certain there is a quick guide illustration as with the Myoko class turrets. If i get time, I will consult Ishibashi.

Re: Calling all IJN Kongo class fans
I can't decipher enough of the Japanese to tell if the various diagrams are referring to changes or different model turrets. Sorry, Atma.
