Return of the Destroyers! Apr. 15-Oct. 15, 2011

Subject:
Any Destroyer, Destroyer Leader, Destroyer Escort or Torpedo Boat Destroyer that served any nation up to the end of WWII or from January 1992 up to today. Any Destroyer that you would like to build in-between these time frames, please enter it into the Cold War Group Build. What if's are allowed as long as they fit into the already mentioned guidelines.


Rules for Builds:
You may choose to build any scale, kit, scratchbuild or kitbash, dioramas are allowed, however the focus should be the entered build. Only the ship built as an entry will be judged unless ship is alone in a seascape at which time total presentation will be taken into account. Super detailed or OOB, doesn't matter, just have fun and share!
I don't want to way this down with lot's of rules, just as one good pirate would say, "They're more like Guidelines" to keep everything neat and organized so we all can enjoy and have fun.
-Only one entry per builder per category, you may enter into all 3
-Only builds from registered board members will be allowed
-If you are building a Cold War Era Destroyer or Transport, please enter it into the "Cold War" group build
-Final judging is final
-All builds must be started on or after the start date and be completed by or on the end date to qualify for contest. All builds however that fall into the categories that have already been started or will not be completed till after due date are welcome however to share.
-Any questions or concerns with these rules may PM me
-Keep it friendly and fun!
There will be awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each category. There will be an award to the builder that shows the most group spirit during the builds. At the end of the allotted time for each build, the 1st place entry chosen from each category will go into the finals for the grand prize.


This build will run from April 15, 2011 thru October 15, 2011

I will post updates here into this message to keep anything important right on top, so please check back every once and awhile.

Updates:
4-4-2011 Awards have arrived for this category including the first place prize! Thanks again to Dragon Models via Rob McCune for suppling the first place prize in the form of the new 1/350 German Destroyer Z-39.

The awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. These are really nice as they hang on a lanyard or that can be removed and they will lay flat or in their display box. They are 2.5 inches across and fairly heavy.

What the 1st place winner will receive

Our "Most Valuable Builder" award or the "MVB" that goes to the person of the three builds that shows the most spirit. You are eligible to win this if you finished in the top three or even if your build didn't place. It is 6X8 with a nice Cherry Wood finish.

To the winner of all three builds will go this very nice glass award. It is 7.25 inches tall with base that is 5.75 inches wide. Picture really doesn't do it justice.

As of today, this is the most active Group Build category with 20 registered participants! 4-4-2011

I am going to jump into this group build with a DDG-51 variant called the "DDV 8". This is going to be based on one of the variants developed by the Gibbs & Cox company in 1991 to increase the flexibility of the DDG-51 Flight I and II hulls. This is the variant study that produced the Flight IIA that is the DDG-51 variant currently being built.

This DDV 8 variant, however is one that was configured to be a flexible littoral ship that incorporated a single helicopter hanger and a Mk71 Major Caliber Light Weight Gun in place of the standard Mk45 5"/54. It was believed in 1991 that the existing Mk71 ModX MCLWG developed by FMC (now owned by BAE) was the best choice to effectively conduct Naval Gunfire Support and would immediately fill the NGFS void left by the decommissioned battleships. The configuration would have had SPY-1 radar but NO illuminators and a swap of VLS numbers in ships of the class: 64 forward and 32 aft. It would have had 2 Phalanx CIWS and 2 RAM launchers.

I will be using:
- Trumpeter Arleigh Burke kit with parts from other Burke-class kits I have left over from other builds.
- Veteran Models Phalanx CIWS, Mk32 SVTT, Mk38 25mm automatic "chain" gun
- Custom made RAM launchers, Mk71 MCLWG, domes
- WEM brass
- Tamiya paints
- Probably other stuff

This is going to be modeled in a 1991 configuration and its fit will reflect that era as opposed to a "modernized" appearance.

Here is the drawing provided in Friedman's US Destroyers 2nd Edition, however the actual configuration depicted in the G&C DDV Helicopter Study is a little different. My model will hopefully depict the actual configuation!

I think this is going to be a great build, guys. I can't wait to see what other people have in store for their builds!

I'll give it a try after I finish Scharnhorst. My entry will be 1/350 Trumpeter Admiral Panteleyev 548 converted to Marshal Shaposhnikov 543. With GMM photo etch. I voted for cold war, but it turns out that the 543 number change didn't happen til after 1991. So, I guess I'm in the destroyer build instead. Dan.

Looking like a good start so far. Looks like a good mix as well.
MichelB, I assume 1/700 scale?
Ex-Navy and NavyDavesof, look like good projects but I think they would fall under the Cold War build criteria rather than the Destroyers.
PetrOs, I will do some research and see how that works out for you.

In view of recent tragic events out there, I'll try to scratchbuild a Kaba class Japanese destroyer of WW1. Probably one of those supplied to France in 1917.

Count me in, I have decided to make this a real challenge and turn this Revell USS Ward kit into something presentable. Which means I will throw half or more of the kit away and scratchbuild it. I'm pretty sure it will be the Reuben James (DD-245) on Neutrality Patrol.

So I'm in with a Hunt Type IV class, only two in the class HMS Brissendon and HMS BreconThere is no kit (as of now) but i'm working on it so the first shots of the hull master in red filler/leveller will have to do for now, more to follow.

Hello everyone. This is my first group build, and will be my first completed ship model in quite some time, as I took a lengthy hiatus into infantry and armour. I have some experience with PE and scratchbuilding from working with my father on his ships, but this will be my first serious solo project (I hardly count the four half completed S-bootes on my workbench right now as SERIOUS). Any tips or advice will be greatly appreciated, and I look forward to getting to know all my friendly competition

Anyway, I will be entering with a Heller 1/400 Z31 as she appeared in December of 1942.

I'll go for the Hr. Ms. Van Galen, as she appeared in 1944 during operation Millet.

The kit will be a 1/600 kit bashed HMS Cossack, as the Dutch N-Class Destroyers were originally British, and are very similar to the Tribal Class destroyers.
