Japanese camo question ?

Post by aleccap »

While a lot of other navy surface shipping wore a camo, the Japinese navy were stuck with grey, very few ships such as Tama and this heavy cruiser Myoko wore a camo.

Can someone please tell me what these camo colours would be ?

I believe they're identified in Steve Wiper's book on Takao Class Heavy Cruisers.

AFAIK, there is no photo of the other side of the ship to confirm that the pattern was similar to both sides. Also take into account that she was at Singapore when this photo was taken so there's a good chance that they used local paints (like Haguro) and not the usual IJN colours.

This contemporary painting by Ernest Buckmaster at the Australian War Memorial website might help:

You can order a copy from the website; this might provide a better colour reproduction than the scan.

Thank you for the replies, while there's nothing quite like building a WW2 Japinese warship, I haven't really come across that many in camo favouring the dark grey's. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a IJN heavy cruiser in camo. :thumbs_up_1:

The Japanese did use a patch type of camo on ships not sea worthy in the latter part of the war. I use german grey for the dark patches. Same color i use on there subs.
