That's why I'm starting with the island, it seems more manageable! Actually, the airwing is what I'm fretting over. The plan is to have the stern loaded with aircraft with wings folded, ahead of them aircraft with wings unfolded being readied for flight and farther forward planes taking off. One thing I've noticed in a lot of photos of planes being launched is the large crowds watching. I'd like to depict that as well, so I'll have a lot of figures. This photo is a bit of an inspiration. I have the 1/700 Hancock CV-19 by Dragon.

Which detailing set is better?
The Tom's Modelworks generic set for Essex Class?
Or the FlyHawk one specific for the Trumpeter Essex kit? Anyone knows if if fits on the Dragon Hancock?

There are many differences between the two carriers?

I'm new to ship-modeling and I still have a lot to learn...

Hi JaM. I do not have either set, but I can say that the Essex and Hancock did have some differences. If the Flyhawk set has custom / pre-fit railings tailored to specific sections then there are some railings that will not work. Essex was a "short hull" design that had a different shape in the bow and stern areas (just above the waterline though).

Generally I find the Tom's sets are more generic, which might make them easier (and less expensive) to work with, which is a definite plus for a first build.

yes, the FlyHawk set is specific for the Trumpeter Essex kit... so, if her hull is different from the hull of Hancock, the detail set will not fit properly...
I need to search some documentation to use the Tom's set

However, it would not be a real "firs build", I build military models since 90s, even if I've never build a ship (mainly tanks and some sci-fi). Recently I've tried this branch of our hobby and I'm building the DD-459 Laffey in 1/700 (you can see it on this thread: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=74098 )

I've now got 3 Essex Class Carriers in progress in 1/350 scale. These are all Trumpeter kits. I am detailing the hangar decks and have pictures off the internet of a simular looking fire station structure during the Vietnam era. This structure is on the starboard side of the ship forward of what I believe is the boiler trunk vent. The structures in on Hancock CV19 and Hornet CV12 look almost identical. What did this structure look like during WWII. Was it that same structure? Does anyone have a WWII picture of this. I'll be thankful for any information

This is probably a question for Tracy. In looking over photos of the Ticonderoga and the Hancock I noticed they both have 2 MK-51 directors on the forward part of the island and on a pedestal mount between the #2 5" mount and the island structure, yet there is only one quad 40mm mount on the forward part of the island. You can see what I mean on the Randolph plan on page 56 & 57 of Essex Class Carriers by Alan Raven and on the photograph of the Ticonderoga on page 13 of the Warship Pictorial 22 - USS Ticonderoga CV/CVA/CVS-14 by Steve Wiper. Why 2 MK-51 directors for 1 40mm mount?

The Mk 51 on the island was for the forward island Quad.... the one on the pedastal behind the 5" mounts was actually for the 5" mounts. Attached is a sketch I found regarding the Mk63 system (essentially a Mk 51 with radar) that lays out Tico's directors following her Kamikaze damage repair & overhaul in early 1945:

What I find amazing is that the Essex Class SCB-125 ships carried 6 "Whales" at one point.

I find it amazing that the forum has been dominated lately by a "numnut" and his silly little cruise ships that had such a small impact historically, the most famous ones because they sank. While a class of ships that essentially won the war in the pacific, got mothballed, defended the Korean Penisula, and carried the U.S. Navy and her Allies through the first half of the Cold War, is essentially ignored after their WWII Configuration.

I agree. I can't fathom why "numnut" frequents this forum anyway, other than he's obviously on a crusade to "educate" us all . . . If there is a forum where I don't like what everyone on the forum is interested in, I simply don't go there. His posts are kind of like gawking at a car accident when you drive by though. It's hard not to look.

The "numnut" term refers to someone who thinks with a part of his anatomy other than the brain - and has nothing there to think with, either. The specific individual in question has come to the "Modelwarships" site and complained on many threads that nobody wants to talk about passenger liners with him. He has a distorted view of history that claims that the two Roosevelts were solely and completely responsible for all of the death and destruction of the last century, but claims his own country never in its history ever was an aggressor or at fault for anything. He puts down anyone who will not totally and completely agree with him, and then can't figure out why everyone is upset with him.
