Well I got an extra Prince of Wales from Tamiya in 1/700 and I thought to build her as Duke of York in 1941. So my question is if that is possible with PoW kit from Tamiya and if os what changes or additions I have to make ? Thanks in advance.
Depends on how picky you are. The big things that I am aware of off the top of my head are the light AA arrangements and the AA directors. (PoW had the MK-IV, DoY had the MK-V.)
Not so picky actually, especially about the directors, Just the light AA position and numbers of Duke of York ? Anyone can help me in that matter ?
Thanks in advance
Edit: The bridge had any structural difference ? And the top of the 2 main masts ?

KGV had more than one camouflage scheme applied during her existence. What time period are you asking about?
For example, there is this scheme and then this scheme. Oh, and this one as well.

This is an early photo of the hull of my model HMS Anson in 1/200 scale. I have progressed a little with the hull planking since the photo was taken, but still have a bit to do before I finish the hull. There are some quite superb models of this vessel on this site and also Brian King's model on the fornt cover of advanced ship modelling.
I am modelling the Tamiya 1/350 HMS Prince of Wales as of December 1941.
I have the following references to go off:
Warship perspectives volume 4
Morskie profile
Tamiya Instructions.
Have purchased WEM colour coat paints as well as ultimate KGV PE set.
I have searched the internet and have founds lots of valuable photos of the port side only, however today I have just found a new photo of POW docking in Cape Town. To complicate matters about the camouflage pattern on the starboard side, the photograph indicates a shade of paint that looks allot like MS1 (Dark Ultramarine Blue) right at the bow of the ship and seems to look like where Alan Ravens book indicates the paint is B5 (Medium Grey Blue), that it is actually MS1.
Does anyone have any information that can help me confirm the colour of paints to location on POW.
I found Alan Ravens books to be the most accurate to date with regards to pattern and colours, however given this photo I have just seen on flickr under a username FrigateRN, it seems to suggest that POW had more MS1 on the starboard side than most sources claim.
For information I have also examined the Force Z survivers website on POW, and unforunately their camouflage pattern is entirely incorrect as there are substansial amounds of photographs that prove is.
That flickr photo is a terribly poor quality and misleading affair.
If you can get hold of Arthur Nicholson's "Hostages to Fortune" you will find a different and much better view of the starboard side of PoW arriving in South Africa confirming that Alan is right. (South African Museum of Military History photo 1197).

Thanks allot for confirming that for me. I am glad I asked.
The Alan Raven books seem to have allot of valuable knowledge and answer questions about how shades appear different.
This is certainly one hard ship to reserarch and model as there seems to be allot of incorrect information out about it. Tamiya certainly did not do us modellers any favours with its colour scheme, and even the Force Z website has mucked up the entire camouflage pattern when you examine it against photos.
About to make a start on Tamiya's KGV 1/350 - will be based on her time with the BPF in early 45.
Some questions:
which are the more accurate plans, those in British Battleships of WWII or those in Shipcraft 2? The immediate differences are the number of scuttles on the bow
where did the paravane chains terminate on the focsle?
how were the lower set of scuttles blanked off - with plates as per the remaining ships of class or removed in toto? None of the photos I have of KGV provide much detail in this area.
were the hawse pipes open or did they have grates on top?
was the third hawse pipe plated over or left open when the anchor was removed?
does anyone do an accommodation ladder and leadsman platform in PE or is it simpler to use one from another RN set?
I am building the PoW as she was in May 1941.
I am now left with 2 unanswered questions that I have been unable to see or find any documentation to provide me with an answer.
#1 The forward HACS tower has what appears to be a hole or an indentation. I have found one photo in which I see daylight thus my conclusion is that it is a through and through hole. Can someone please confirm?
#2 I know PoW had a single 40mm Bofors on the fantail. All references I have seen do not clearly show that area. I have one photo in which there is a UP launcher in a half tub on the fantail. The Tamiya kit provides a tub and what I call a FC director, but I believe this to be correct for her December 1941 outfit. May 1941 calls for a single Bofors and I believe that meant the single gun with nothing else around it on the fantail. Can someone please confirm?

Yes , elongated opening, front & rear. In Ensign 1 vertical view of PoW, 8th of May 1941 shows single (army pattern) 40 mm, also painted (dark gray?) main deck. hth
