Calling all Charles F. Adams-class DDG fans

Hey folks,

I'm giving some thought to building a larger scale model of an Adams; not sure yet exactly what scale as I'm contacting the Vietnam Veterans Memoiral in Mineral Wells, TX about donating it to their displays. Anyway, I checked Floating Drydock for a plan set of in particular the hull and can't find one. Anyone have any recommendations on where a set can be had?

I don't know if this, "fix", is what you had in mind but, if you decide to build an Adams class DDG in 1/96 scale, the ScaleShipYard sells hulls and scale drawings together.
The drawings I got with my 1/96 DDG hull were of DDG-24 and consisted of stbd side profile and deck plans. There's your large scale hull and drawings in one swoop. SSY also offers the earlier version of an Adams class DDG too.

Anyone know the type/mark of the davits for the motor whaleboat on the Adams class ships? What company manufactured them? Better still, does anyone know where to find drawings, tech manuals or training information about these davits?

I am trying to figure out how they work. I know that the upper arm that supports the boat moves down the angled slide to position the boat over the side for lowering, and is then hoisted back up for stowage. I understand how the rigging to the boat winch works. What I want to know is how the davits were latched in place in the stowed position and how they were released for lowering - details of the latching and release mechanism.

Any bosun's mates here with experience operating the davits?

The "santa hat" antenna you asked about is an AS-979A/UKR telemetering antenna.

Now you know as much as I do. I haven't been able to find out much about this antenna.

Edited: The AS-979 may have been a missile telemetry antenna used to recieve data from missiles in flight.

Thanks! The davits I am looking at are similar - I have attached a sketch.

The Seamanship manual answered several questions and confirmed some of what I had already guessed. I was puzzled at the function of the "J" shaped bars on the moving arms. The manual informed me that these are falls tensioning devices that cause the blocks to be pulled up to the highest position when they are not connected to the boat. This automatically pulls them up where they won't be a hazard to the crew or the boat. I suppose I may have "learned" that in a class 42 years ago when I was in training, but if so I had completely forgotten it.

One of the odd things about researching a model ship is that you can find drawings of some parts but nothing for other pieces. I have drawings of the motor whaleboat, and I found a patent for the davit winch online that tells me all I want to know and a lot more. But the davits are still a bit of a mystery.

One of my pet peeves, its getting harder and harder to find this stuff because the manuals become obsolete and nobody saves them except maybe HNSA, and they don't have anything above Seaman.

BTW, that Boatswain's manual is great for details on modern era unrep for diorama purposes.

This is a Very interesting thread, I to plan to build a 1/96 Adams. I think these were beautiful Destroyers and truly hope some are preserved as museum ships if any are still in mothballs. I too am having to model a SPS-40 radar for my FRAMED SUMNER. I have the main arm brackets drawn and intend to try to photo etch it as a 1/96 scale fitting. but am waiting till I get the main mast and platforms figured out for my Sumner before I model it.

I have some good detail shots of SPS-40, and I'm willing to share these with you.
I will just wait til I have an a/m p/e SPS-40 for my 96 scale DDG-22 project.
In 1/96 scale, the model is a nice 56.5" long. If you plan to R/C your model, I have plenty of suggestions!
Even if you have no plans to R/C it, I have much to share.

That's really sweet! Thanks for sharing with we DDG fans! A 1/96 scratch-built model....no simple task....and it's finished too! Congratulations for that alone!
If there is one thing to say about DDG fans, we're a dedicated bunch! Here's to the Charles F Adams fans!
These ships are extremely sexy! I can still remember one of our own SD IPMS members reflecting on his days as MK68 GFCS officer aboard DDG15 during the early 70's. He was telling the group a little bit about the ship itself, its' ride characteristics at various sea states etc....but when it came to his rather inspired description of the ships powerplant and speed capabilities......" here's this fleet destroyer with 70,000 horsepower.........it had soooooooo much power...!!!.." It was cool hearing his tone of voice and seeing him raise his hands and arms in a certain way as he described how macho these ships were! To be on one of those ships must have been cool! That's all I can think.
Questions:
Did you use a ScaleShipyard hull?
Is your model R/C?
How long did you spend on this?
What other "works" have you done?"
Are you getting involved with the CFA association?

The hull is from scratch, plank over frames and then fiberglass. The forward superstructure and mast are brass.
I built a BaD version a year before and found out the proportions were off. This model is not an RC version.

I have had contact with Dave Myerly at the CFA, he helped me with the ALQ 12. The Sampson was the test bed for the Tartar weapons system from 1963 to 1965 and was first with many of the weapons systems improvements. The Sampson was the only ship with the ALQ 12 (1965) which lead to all ships getting the ALQ 32 in the 1970s. Sampson got the SPS 39 Series lll in 1963.

Well this has been interesting reading all this I was aboard Stoddard during viet nam before being transferred to Uss America, been trying to find a plastic model of the Stoddard so searched online which brought me here lol still cant seem to find it anywhere..oh wait yeah I did a really big scale for 135 dollars!! not looking for the big size I build car models you know the 1/24th scale thats almost the scale Im looking for course for ships its like 1/1000 scale or something not sure havent done one yet. Nice pics through out though now if I can just find some from subic bay and Olangopo city that would be really kool lol

please find below some pictures of my build of DDG-20 USS Goldsborough in her last fit prior to decommissioning.
I used the Revell 1/700 CFA kit, Flagship Models PE details, though i did not use the railings.

Maybe a DDG-20 veteran will get to see your model here. You may consider submitting your photos and build details to "submissions@modelwarships.com". If you're interested in letting many more prople see your finished model, then this would be the way to do it.

Howdy everyone.

New here and just checking in to say "hi". I served as an FC aboard DDG-22 "The Sweat" from '85-'88, and am just now getting around to building the WEM 1/350 model of it I purchased several years ago.

Although I used to build models as a kid, this is the first resin kit I've ever attempted, so we'll see how it goes! I did notice that the WEM kit is inaccurate as far as building it for the later post-upgrade of DDGs 19, 20 and 22 i.e. it includes the AN/SPQ-9 of the Mk.86 GFCS, but completely left out the SPG-60 radar and associated deckhouse/xmtr room modifications. Oh well, pending availability of Veteran Models SPG-60 parts, my plan is to scratch build those elements.

As I mentioned, I was an FC and worked on both the '52C 3D search radar as well as the '51C(D) missile radar, so if anyone has any questions, fire them my way and I'll do my best to answer. I noticed earlier in this thread there were questions about the 39/52 radars, and there are a few subtle differences between them, and even between "identical" systems on different ships. They both used the base SPA-72 antenna, but the '39 always had a "squint wedge" which tilted it a few degrees sideways i.e. it wasn't level/parallel to the base and deck.

I have a fair amount of detail photos from the mid-late 80s timeframe, so if you're looking for anything specific to DDG-22, feel free to give me a holler.
