I have to agree with your idea and with Bruce's as well. She wouldnt have been in any kind of shape for a formal inspection with white gloves etc. at that point in her career. I'm sure if the rest of your paint and building comes out like what you've done so far, it's going to be one hell of a ship!

I see the blade putty in the background. You use this on the styrene? How is it? I have been "trying" to use Tamaya white putty and it is awful, don't like it all.

OK, I have called this project a steep learning curve, and I have learnt a lot.

But its time to ask for help...............

I have a great collection of R/C gear, speed controllers, batteries (but i think i need some more) -but just cannot
figure it out.
principal problem is the speed controllers to motors reciever/battery set up.
I am terrified of frying something........

If there is anyone in the western suburbs of sydney who knows their stuff and would like to share a couple of beers -and earn a little pocket money -and show me what goes where..............please drop a e mail.
i am trying to plan where to put reciever and stuff -does the length of wires to servos make a difference?

Hi Herbieham,

I have been following your build for a while now and I have found your work amazing. I am seriously looking at having a go myself, but I am having trouble getting information sources to match up with each other.

I have the Yamato - AOTS book, brilliant book and so much detail, but the model in the Kure has MANY differences from the book, some small, some large!

I wondered just how good the plans you have from Loyalhanna dockyard are, I have a set off Ebay that are a bit naff for anything but general setting out, and I am trying to get hold of a copy of Model Arts Super Illustration Yamato, but looks like it's a bit hard to find. (Understatment of the century!)

I know accurate info is a bit hard to come by, but I would at least like to have a stab at getting it in the ball park of right, how do you decide which source to follow?

Just one other thing, how many layers of Fibreglass did you end up with, was it just the two? Is that enough to remove all flex?

Hi everyone

A wonderful guy from Hubertus model boat club came round, and i am a goer with the R/C........learnt heaps.

I just need some wire, and some other bits and pieces, and I think I can do this.
he also showed me LCD lights -which after seeing them, will JUST have to be included!

First step, I had to get a charger for the transmitter - one that came with it does not suit aussie stuff.
Jaycar fixed that!.
So, I am pretty excited now, next pay -and we begin wiring the beast!
(he gave the beast a thumbs up too -so that helps!)

Look -with yamato - i know that you can get into serious trouble some places saying, this is the definitive yamato!
So many different drawings, so many new discoveries.
Everytime I surf japanese sites -man -thats different!
So, I made a decision. I am making a scaled up 1/200 Nichimo -with Kure model details as i see fit.
I cannot see myself making a 100% accurate model -but i think this - how many people who will see it will know any different!
This ship will not be museum quality -just the best i can do..........maybe the next one..........grin.

Fibreglass
Heavy frame -very heavy Plywood - each frame is an inch thick
3 big keels
balsa
bog

One layer glass mat - very thin
one layer expoxy
two layers flow coat.

BUT -this is not your hardware shop glass - i have an industrial chemist as a friend -he made me a very special batch, same that our minehunters use!
But -as thin as it is (the glass is , gee, 3mms? -no flex at all!
And i have all the wood work to go for the ballast ect to stiffen further yet..........

i have the wiring worked out! -and have begun to fit -albiet slowly -its so cold nothing is getting done during the week in the evenings


A massive stroke of luck -windy day yesterday -very windy........and my nieghbours shed roof blew clean off -50 square feet of timber and tin -and it missed my model ship shed on its 'trip' by literally 1 foot.
it would have destroyed it.................


so, the thought was -can you get these models insured?
it might be worth a thought!

Going away for a week or two -hope to install first servo for rudder after that - nice big metal geared one-that should do the trick!

I would check with your Insurer 2 see if you can get Yamato added as a special item on your Home contents policy these usually cover shed contents as well. That should cover you while she's at home! You just need 2 work out a value....!!!!! Materials+man hours in constructing said beast!! It will blow your mind!!

A nice metal gear servo

the plan is to put a thin plastic deck over the top, if the servo ever fails, i can access with little problem

info of the inside of the hanfer/lift and lift well is non existant as far as I can tell.

But, as a sailor myself, I have made a couple of assumptions.

Its got to have lighting
It must have some sort of fire fighting gear
deck remote Vv reaches are a given
Purists might boo, but I am going to give the well deck a little detail

so i am working on that
