Which kit you consider the best way to start with? The Dragon kit has to be modified, e.g. the enlarged hangar, modified Phalanx positions, RAM launcher (see this post) etc.

Did someone tried one of the Fujimi kits of the Spruance class? They appear to be in the right fit, but the details would have to be replaced anyway.
Hey, man, are you looking for a 1/350 or a 1/700 kit? If 1/700 JAG has resin RAM launchers that can work for you. If you are doing Dragon's 1/350 I can help you out with the RAM launchers.

Sorry, I was talking about a 1/700 kit.

I have RAM launchers by JAG. Thank you for the offer!

The question is more the superstructure, which has to be modified in case of the Dragon kit. I am not sure about the quality of the superstructure parts of the Fujimi kits.

Fujimi have kits in 1/700 of:
Cushing
Kinkaid
Fife

All boxarts show typical late fit Spruance class ships.

If you're building any of the 1/700 Dragon Spruance kits than you'll need to completely scratch build the bulkheads that go around the helo deck and the Sea Sparrow deck. They got the detail ALL wrong and the easiest thing to do is sand them flat and start over with PE and styrene. The re-fueling stations are the biggest flaw. They put them even on both sides in the middle of the helo deck when both are further aft and asymmetrical. I built new bulkheads out of two pieces of really thin styrene that added up to the width of the kit part. High-res detail photos from DefenseImagery.mil really helped in the reconstruction. The superstructure detail is better but they're are still some things that need to be scraped off and added on.

By the way, I have found out a lot about her since I originally posted this.

She is totally awesome. If the Navy had retained the Spruances they could have been like this and enabled the Navy to actually maintain the numbers of modern combatants it needs to perform its mission  .

The PFF was my very first ship. I am glad to see that she has not suffered the fate of the other Spruances.

Dave,

You piqued my curiousity so I did a little research on the Foster as the SDTS. There's not much to be found! :Mad_6:

I did learn that the ship is equipped for remote control operation for obvious reasons. One or more the antennas may be related to that?

Thanks for bringing the topic up!

Regards,
Bob

I am currently working on a Spruance but it is the Cushing. I have been thinking about building the PFF in her late 80's configuration. I am currently in the process of building each ship that I served on, but do not have another Spruance kit. Guess I could get another, though my wife gives me enough grief about all of the kits I have in the basement that I have not even started on.

You can rotate it so that you can see all four sides of the ship.

Thank you for the links.

Wow... I guess getting my copy of Electronic Greyhounds for .50 cents at the thrift store last month was really lucky. Also got Sumner-Gearing Class Destroyers by Sumnall for the same price. Both books are excellent. :)

Did the Spruance class have prop guards? I have seen pictures both ways. Is this a matter of some did, some didn't or were they removed at some time?

1/350 USS Missouri
1/350 Spruance Class

As built they did. They were susceptible to tug and pier damage and many ships had them removed. The beam was wide enough to protect the screws without them present.

I've heard about this book. Is it any good for model building purposes?

There are worth-while pictures in both books, but Electronic Greyhounds is really great book on the class and a few programs that occurred in the same timeframe. The Sumner-Gearing book is really, really, really indepth with the class as a whole, and it is one of the few sources that really offers an excellent description of the varoius modifications made to the class following WWII.

I served some brief time on the USS Moosbrugger and am about to start a model of her made from the Arthur Radford kit.

I'm looking for a good pic of her antlers below the bridge windows. I'd swear I had a photo of them, but I don't.

anybody got a good pic of them?
every ship better than the one before.....

You may have seen my antler picture from that ship which originally posted at Steel Navy about 2006 I think. I know it has been distributed one other time since (but not by me but nice to see it in use), perhaps on this site. It was a scan of a 35MM print so the quality would have been reasonable. It should be on my current computer somewhere so I should be able to find it. I just completed an IT certification exam a couple hours ago so I need to get my brain back to normal first (and I passed!).
