I went to a model store today and took a chance on XF-11 JN GREEN and XF-5 FLAT GREEN

Fingers crossed .....many thanks for respondingImage

Ok so... I wouldnt call myself a beginner because I have completed complicated kits and they have turned out very well but I also wouldnt say they were museum quality. Soooo... I was wondering if buying the 1/250 Doyusha IJN Shinano woiuld be worth the money. I have read reviews of the kit but they were by an expert modeler who knows his stuff. My question is would it be worth the money for someone at my level?

There are two builds in the CV gallery, both from early on. one is Bill Waldorf's, with some commentary:

The other is by Joe Chan: http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery ... index.html

best bet is to talk to them.

Im surpised that none of the 4 major companies(Aoshima, Fujimi, Hasegawa and Tamiya) from Japan never made a Hiyo model, the only major Japanese aircraft carrier that is left out.

If I recall, Fujimi makes a Hiyo. No idea about the kit quality though.
Current Builds:
1-350 DKM Z-39
1-350 USS Philippine Sea

Tamyia makes a Junyo 1/700 for I have built 2. As far as Hiyo I do not know. The Tamiya kit is gorgeous though.

Did anyone notice this new release from Pit Road ? Early war Japanese naval warplanes pre-painted set. They seem nice painted and they got the propeller too.

OMG OMG ! :woo_hoo:
I just recieved my Fujimi's Taiho in 1/700 from Hobby Search and it spined my mind. Forget everything you knew about old Tamiya's Taiho, Fujimi's Taiho is just amazing, deep and accurate details, sides of the ship I never knew before and AA guns and main bridge that portays accurate the real ship, is simple a piece of fine art, enjoy:http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10127301

For those looking of a new kit of the Hosho, here she is, with later variants hopefully also a possibility down the road. HLJ also lists pre-orders for PE, wood deck, and dry-transfer decals for the wood deck.

On the late war 2-tone green camouflage that Japanese carriers wore, were the decks painted the same color as the hull (light or dark green), or where they left grey? I'm especially curious about the fore and aft decks under the flight deck overhangs.

TIA...
Martin

I am planning on building the old Fujimi Hosho, and was wondering, when the ship still had the bridge on the flight deck, were there doors somewhere on the structure itself? Or a ladder to the top? I've looked for decent pictures, but can't find any. Also, Lars' build from way back is a great reference, and will be used to help update things, along with the ne-03 pit-road weapons set.

That's a really good question. I don't have plans. I can offer these 3 enlargements. It's a tall island, at least 4 decks yet, unless theres something else in the back, it looks like all access is internal, or perhaps thru the tripod legs and up.

Thanks for those pics Dan, they're great! but alas, as you noted, they don't answer the question. One build I saw had a ladder ascending along the tripod leg, but that seems a needlessly difficult way too get up there. My assumption is that you entered from within, below the deck. The whole island looks smooth around the exterior, so no doors. I'm just going to build it as is and if anyone asks I'll just say that the Japanese were trained to pole vault from the flight deck into the bridge.

As a side note on the kit itself, despite some of the obvious problems (no portholes etc...) I'm surprised at how nice a lot of it really is. I'm not sure there is anything that is completely unworkable, which is not the case with a lot of these older IJN light carriers.

I have a question about the Shinano.
Was their flightdeck a wooden deck (Teak) or a steel deck?
