Andrew,

On some (all?) US Navy ships the down pipe size varies somewhat proportionally with the deck area drained (water volume). Down pipes from upper decks may drain onto lower decks, so the lower down pipes must carry larger volumes of water.

For example, on the CLGs (which I am most familiar with) drains from small weather decks were 1 1/2", larger areas were drained with 2" down pipes, really large decks and lower superstructure decks that received water from upper down pipes were drained with 3" pipes. The drains from the main deck through hull scuppers were 4" diameter.

I have no idea what the Soviets actually used, but the pipes on the CLGs would correspond roughly to 40mm, 50mm and 75mm pipes for the superstructure down pipes.

Thanks Dr. P

for the drains from 01 deck down to 1 deck (main through deck) I have gone with 72mm, 1mmin scale. And it looks ok.

I will assess the drains higher up he ship as the superstructure grows.

Hope to post a progress pic on the weekend...

Don't know about the Soviets, but for our ships it's generally around 75mm everywhere. The effort in calculating all the different sizes needed for different surfaces etc. would probably cost you more than using a standardised size, be it a little oversized for some areas... Nobody would notice the difference in scale in a model anyway. Good luck, I've also added the drain pipes, they give a special look to any ship model.

What have you guys come up with as the paint color to use for the decks and is it available in the bottle or will it always be a mixture of various colors. Is it a rust color, a red, orange, brown, black ? Confusing to say the least. For my Kiev I mixed my own color, if its correct remains to be seen. http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery ... index.html

Thanks Tony

I have been following Dave Wooley's hangar build on HMS Daring viewtopic.php?f=13&t=82385

I'd like to try something similar, but I only have pictures looking down into the hangar on Pyotr Velikiy. If anyone has any decent shots of the inside of the hangar I'd appreciate a look. Thanks!

Now, here's a picture of the much-discussed stern tunnel.

I wasn't planning on building mine with the hanger open so I haven't looked for those kinds of pictures very much. However I did find these have been posted over on the forums.airbase.ru site in the last couple days. Maybe they'll help you some.

Like the pictures, thanks for posting them. :thumbs_up_1: Now that I've had a look I'm not so sure that trying to model it is a good idea - lots of crazy angles and stuff in there

carr wrote:, your next miracle assignment is to find photos of the underwater cooling water scoops that the kit shows as large, protruding objects. So far no one has been able to provide any photographic evidence that they exist as the Trumpeter kit protrays them.

Alternatively, find a photo of the smaller, secondary hull mounted sonar. Again, there is no photographic evidence of this, as yet.
Bob, I have recently found some drydock pictures. Here's the best one, let me know if you'd like to see some more. Does this help to confirm their existence one way or the other?

If you can post the original resolution version of that picture, then perhaps it may provide the answers we seek!

Sorry, that's the best resolution I have for now. Unless I get a longer lens or sneak a bit closer :lol_3:
Here are some more, from the same Russian website. Sorry can't remember the URL, if I find it again I'll post it.

Some great interior views here: http://www.inosmi.ru/images/16162/55/161625541.swf

The site is in Russian, but if you click the centre blue button on the page you will see an outline of the ship with views you can examine. These are 360 degree views so you can look around. Great images of the hangar and flyco, plus many others.

Hi there , this topic looks like the closest to what I am looking for , I have had a Airfix Moskava in my collection for many years but have never started because the stern underside is soo ugly it can't be correct , does anyone have a basic plan / elevation so I can maybe modify it to be closer to the real thing. BTW I was really excited when I heard the Trumpy was releasing a 1/350 Moskava - only to find out it wasn't the old helicopter cruiser that I thought , oh well . Any help would be really - helpful, thanks.

cheers Jay
