Airfix-RNLI Severn class life boat

Post by commodore4 »

YUP , Its a floatable thingy ! Its , 1/72 scale and the kit number is 07280 . This kit caught my eye because I like ships and boats that most here in TEXAS don,t seem to appreciate .I had one instance , many years back to come in contact with the ROYAL NATIONAL LIFEBOAT INSTITUTE and it,s vessels. We ,those employed by BP/SHELL , got a tour of one of their stations especially those who spent most of the time at sea. AIRFIX makes it plain (I don, tknow how true it is)That 60 pence from each model sold will be paid in support of the RNLI. Now for the model . Have any of you readers seen HOW IT,S MADE or HOW DID THEY DO THAT ?. If you did there was an episode on ,of all things the exact type of lifeboat that is presented here in model form . And based on the program shots of the exterior and interior she,s very accurate! I must say though, AIRFIX/HORNBY did NOT disappoint me . Like their two types of Vosper boats (WW2 issue, also in 1/72 scale) and the original release of the FLOWER CLASS CORVETTE they kept to a formula that works and works well .YES , it has a multi-piece hull AND---It fit together like a piece of artwork ! I do like these models. The lifeboat has Three reasonably sized grey sprues (there may be four , but I already started building it !)The parts are held to the sprues (or trees)by very small but strong points that are hidden when you clip the part off .The one clear sprue has good molding But the surface has distortions .(I will replace them with .010 clear sheet styrene .) The screws and rudders are in scale .The only problem I have had concerns the Control shafts on the Cavitation Plates .They broke into very little bits when I tried to trim them out. There,s some flash here that has to go . So I matched the diameter with BRASS rod and viola' a perfect set !The multiple pieces that make up the cabin sides and roof fit very well and didn,t cause any problems . the interior parts DID NOT bind or cause fit problems with the roof and sides . I don,t know how much more I can say as to the kit except if you like vessels like this ,don,t miss this kit ! commodore4
