Is the ship's whistle left unpainted also?

On USN I don't see why it would not be painted.

In my experience, there are steam whistles and air horns. If it is brass it isn't painted. If it is any other metal then it is painted.
I would imagine that steam whistles would most likely be brass and the horns would be steel or other metal.

Normally air horns are painted. But then again, some are made of brass.
