Pontos Models 1/350 CVL-22 Deck

Post by dylan »

I saw these decks advertised on Lucky models website a few weeks ago. and I figured I would give them a try, boy am I glad I did.
I paid $38 for the set, with free shipping from LM. a real bargain. considering the same thing for the Gambier bay kit from hasegawa is around $100
what you get is two really nicely done self adhesive deck pieces, a fret of P.E brass, some black anchor chain, and dry transfers for the deck markings etc.

some really nice detail there

theres even some nice pieces representing the steel deck around the island

and the best part of all the dry transfers. i really hope they do more of these, something like the swastika on the bow of the Bismarck would be nuch easier to apply with Dry transfers. and there is no need to gloss coat the model to get them to stick.

the deck pieces are stained a dark blue somewhere between 20-B Deck Blue and 21 Flight Deck Stain according to them. I think it looks good to my eyes, and everything lines up perfectly to the Dragon kit.
you can see the cut lines from the back, and where the stain has soaked through.

the instructions are good but will need to be read carefully to avoid any misplaced parts.

I am really looking forward to finishing off my Independence now.

Looks nice. If I may, I suggest that one of the mods move this to the reviews section before it falls off the board.

It looks good.
Do you push the decks out or cut them?

A little of both, the wood is cut through but the plastic backing is only part way. I figure I will lift all the tiny discard pieces off with a sharp knife then trim out the rest of the deck out.
other decks I have are cut all the way through, which makes them a little easier to clean up.

I am interested in these decks. So, if they are available in the US, I would like to find them.

dylan, sorry for the late reply. The thread vanished and I was left scratching my head and wondering if it was a UFO  (I see it went to the review section).

Thanks for the info!

Sorry to be late to the party, but question time: how does one paint the PE deck parts if the deck is already stained? I'm assuming that the parts should be painted on the fret and before removing them. But... If the deck is already stained, wouldn't that tend to make it a less "grabby" gluing surface?

Thanks for any pointers or experiences, as I'm considering buying one of these sets and I like to be well-educated about things before I jump in.

Thanks!

The wood is plenty porous enough for the glue to grab - the paint stain won't affect glue adhesion.
