Calling all October Revolution / Marat / Gangut class fans

Imperial Russian Navy Gangut had a long and eventful career. Arguably the ships of the class did not look specific when commissioned but had the heaviest projectile in the world for the guns of its caliber. It also had its unique armor protection designed by Russian engineers. It was modernized just in time before the WWII to receive new equipment and superstructure which created its strikingly unique and truly iconic look of Soviet battleship. Renamed "Oktyabrskaya revolutsiya" (Russian: ??????????? ?????????: October Revolution) and its sister-ship Marat , former Petropavlovsk played crucial role in defending the city of Leningrad against the German effort.
"Parisian Commune" (former Sevastopol) fought at Black Sea defending the city of Sevastopol.
It proved its sturdy construction and battle worthiness when continued to fight despite heavy hits. Marat was hit by two "Fritz" bombs and broken in two, but stayed afloat and continued to fire its main 12 in caliber on enemy positions.
"Oktyabrskaya revolutsiya" was in active service up until 1957 so there is more then enough detailed photographs on her, which, thanks to the legacy of Soviet state, are all in public domain.
There is only small scale model exists in the market today which is inaccurate and it took a real love of the modeler to the graceful lines of the ship to recreate it using that kit.
There are many skillful people on this forum who could bring bring up the beauty of those magnificent ships.

Im a huge fan of these ships and a good thread on them is long overdue IMHO.

I picked up a book on them recently called " Famous Warships monographs number one The Russian Battleships Sevastopol class" by Maciej S.Sobanski
Crammed with excellent photographs,colour plans,histories of each ship in the class AND THREE double sided large fold out black and white profiles and plans.

The ISBN number is 83-915653-2-7 and is published by "Okrety Wojenne"

Well worth tracking down,I paid �25 for mine at a model show,was the last copy and I was lucky to get it on the day... .

The kit of Pariz Komun by Combrig.. there is really not very much right about that....

The kit by HP Models of Okt Rev is dimensionally fundamentally ok..--but is lacking in a number of areas...( deck!!)

I did actually build the kit--with considerable effort--using the aforementioned book...

Yes, Mr. Baumann, actually it was your work that I mentioned as a labor of love, and very well done despite the kits themselves not being very good.


The ships surely deserve a better detailed representation. May be a kit from Dragon at 1:350.

I give credit to Alexi. The project looks very complicated. Thanks for posting. I think the Sevastopol class (modernized) is the most interesting class of battleships. Marat is the only ship I've built twice.

Can anyone describe how good (or bad) the retooled Combrig Gangut is? I know originally the kit was quite flawed (but so was their Ryurik II). Is it much better now? It appears to include PE which the original didn't.

The new kit is really excellent; I made a side by side comparison with the old release as soon as it arrived, and the differences in casting quality, detail, and (eyeball verification only!) fidelity to scale are light years apart.

My only complaint is that there is a small casting flaw near the stern that almost looks like mold mis-alignment. A few swipes with sandpaper should take care of it, though.

Great News!

Zvezda is going to issue all Sevastopol class as build and also as at WWII.

Their representative speaks in russian forum about it, telling that after Sevastopol 1914 others will follow in different times.

He says that 8 ships are planned. Fantastic!

First pictures of 1/350 hull parts of the coming models from Zvezda appeared at scalemodels forum.

The upper section of the bow is constructed as replaceable to accommodate different bows of Marat, Parizian Commune and October Revolution in propective Zvezda's offerings.

Guys,

What an intriguing class of battleships! I see Zvesda is coming out with a 1/350 Sevastopol. Would anyone know what period the model depicts? I would prefer WW II to fit into the genre of my other models but I'm open to suggestion.
