I built the new Aoshima version. I didn't think it was laughable, in fact, I thought it pretty good.

Re: Calling all IJN Carrier fans
You will definitely agree with me when you will compared to the new IJN Hiryu.
The new Fujimi releases(Including IJN Hosho 1939 and the IJN Seaplane Carrier Sagaramaru, wich is actually the first release from this new team) is the first wave of a new team for the 1/700 started by Fujimi.

Did the Sagara Maru team correct the main deck (should be metal, not wood) or freeboard (short by 2mm) errors?

Re: Calling all IJN Carrier fans
See my new release "Hosho - 1939" review in the "Review" section of this forum. Bridge was only present from 1923 commissioning through mid-1924, apparently.WI_Chris wrote:I am planning on building the old Fujimi Hosho, and was wondering, when the ship still had the bridge on the flight deck, were there doors somewhere on the structure itself? Or a ladder to the top? I've looked for decent pictures, but can't find any. Also, Lars' build from way back is a great reference, and will be used to help update things, along with the ne-03 pit-road weapons set.

Notably, Fujimi's new circa 1939 kit does not have the parts that would allow you build the circa 1923-1924 version, missing the bridge and crane. Flight deck is also different: shorter, wider, and without the downward canting at the bow that denotes the 1923-1924 build.
Hobby Link Japan posted news of a Fujimi 1941 Hosho kit, to be released in November, so perhaps there is hope for a new mold of 1924 or other variations.
Hull of the new Fujimi kit is much more detailed than the old 1999 release. Notably, however, it is 1/8 inch shorter than the 1999 release, and so you'd have to make flight deck length adjustments among others to kitbash the 2011 and 1999 kits for a circa-1924 build.

Re: Calling all IJN Carrier fans
The Pit Road's IJN Unryu is been re-released as it seems by this link:
http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10162087
Those kits was rare nowdays, IJN Unryu and IJN Katsuragi(Did Pit Road also released the IJN Amagi as well), and all I knew about those kits is that where far better than the old Aoshima kits.
So any reviews/comments ? Anyone build one of those ?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Calling all IJN Carrier fans
Interesting. I wonder if it will be an "improved" version, like their Maya kit, "improved being a relative term (not).
They did release an Amagi. I have the Unryu and Katsuragi sitting in the closet. They certainly look improved over the the original Aoshima kit but, I know Martin Quinn is not happy with his build. Marty, care to elaborate?

Dan
Have you found anything else out about Hosho's AA fit between 1939-42. I still think the kit has too many 25mm AA for 1939, so I'm trying to determine which year is actually correct for this kit.
thanks
Mike

Re: Calling all IJN Carrier fans
I'm so sorry, Mike, I thought I had posted a response. Got distracted.
I can't give you a proper answer. The most recent reference that I have is the new Model Graphix volume on IJN CVs but, it's all in Japanese (of course) and, there's no easily discernable information, such as a table listing of fits. It's all text.
I'll keep trying, though.

No worries Dan, I'll wait and see what you can come up with. It would be nice to know if the kit is correct and for what year!
thanks

Does anyone know what year the new 1/700 Fujimi Hiryu will represent? Hopefully 1941?

Re: Calling all IJN Carrier fans
The only difference between a very late 1941 and mid 1942 version is the additon of the red hinomaru circle on the flight deck.

Mediocre fit, sink holes, flash, mold lines. Shall I go on?
