The Flyhawk set is very easy to work with. I'm going to obviously have a lot left over from this kit because the set is WWII. I plan on using whatever I can on my North Carolina. I will definitely be picking up another Flyhawk set when I recreate the 1944 NJ again.


I actually have a question and I'm not sure what they're called, but near the stern did NJ have those beams to tie boats up? PE versions are included in the Flyhawk set. I know during WWII they were there. Not sure if they were removed during modernization.

I believe that they were removed, certainly I've not noticed them in any photos.

Some modest progress on my IJN Nashi and JMSDF Wakaba builds. The Wakaba, as a radar trials ship, will be my official entrant in the group build.

Here are the two Pit Road Wakaba hulls I am working on. One will date to its use as a training vessel after it was raised and renovated - this requires stripping down the deck of many cast-on features of the Pit Road hull. The second hull will be build as the re-armed version that served as the radar trials ship, and most of the hull features will stay on. Pit Road makes a dediciated PE fret for the latter version of this kit, and I've begun folding, spindling and mutilating, as this is really my first significant jump into PE. Photos of those efforts will be forthcoming.

And here is a comparison of the IJN Nashi (Tachibana Class) and JMSDF Wakaba hull castings, both from Pit Road. I'm also building the Nashi "as launched" and "as sunk" for a four-model timeframe of this ship:

Can someone recommend a source of JMSDF-appropriate PE railing and staircases for use on these two vessels?

I finally managed to make some progress... Not much but it is a step forward. Next step is removing all the molded on vertical ladders and adding pe ones.

Nick, I like your enthusiasm! I've been behind schedule myself and look forward to the rush to finish for all of us. Agreed - let's not forget to post pictures in progress. I learn something from each of your builds!

Gentlemen, Old North Carolina will have to wait for another time. Ran into too many issues with the Trumpy kit and I still need more parts that no one has in stock and haven't a clue as to when they'll be back. I'm going to be ambitious and use the 3 weeks left as a challenge for a different kit. My sig talks about a dio with Hayler, John A. Moore, and William V. Pratt in it. Well, Niko's 1/700 DDG-40 kit will be built in the time remaining. I'm finishing this dio for Dad for Christmas and Pratt is the only one that still needs major construction. The other two are assembled and painted and just need their masts and weapons.







I'm backdating the kit to reflect Pratt in 1975 when Dad reported aboard for his first tour of duty as her Weapons Officer, fresh out of OCS. The major surgery is already complete; removal of the SRBOC platform (Niko only included the starboard one and forgot about the port, good thing for me ) and removal of the harpoon decks. Only other mods will be a scratch built ULQ-6 ECM system in place of the SLQ-32 and some radar swaps. The flag bags will have to be sanded off and moved forward. I've already made some replacements. The forward funnel is in place to make sure my super glue works with the resin and so far no problems.

I'll whip up the ECM tomorrow and then begin painting. This is my first resin kit so this should be fun and educational

Will I finish in time? Stay tuned!

One ULQ-6 ECM system as promised! I think its fairly convincing for 1/700.








Need to let my eyes readjust now. Working with slivers of plastic 1/4 of millimeter in size does wonders for your sight

Turns out the flag bags can actually stay where they are. They moved them around it seems as mods were made and they're close enough for my liking. Three millimeters too far back doesn't bother me.

Time for some more progress shots:









Mods are finally complete; had to sand off some more cast on details than I originally thought. Mainly around the mainmast and forward stack. I wound up sanding off the kit flag bags and replacing them after all. I also added some more bracing to the ULQ-6 platform. I still need to add some lower braces but I wanted to wait until the railings were done first.

Niko included some very finely detailed cast on hatches and other assorted hardware but not the vertical ladders. Personally I prefer this since the PE ladders are almost always better than anything you can cast on. I added all of the ladders I could find in photos as well as some life rings and fire plugs. I also began to add railing to the upper decks; man oh man... I caution anyone building this kit to LEAVE OFF the forward funnel until you have ALL of the railings done on the forward superstructure. That little bugger cost me several hours in extra work and lost railings. Oh well, live and learn. I also noticed I grabbed 3-bar railing instead of 2-bar for the superstructure Oh well again. For sake of symmetry, I'll keep using 3-bar for the O-3 deck and below. I noticed my error and 2-bar will populate the upper decks.

Working with all of that 1-700 railing brought me to my patience threshold so I'll wait to add the rest of the upper railing. I'm still debating on whether or not to try and add railing to the ULQ-6 platforms. I'll see if I have any left over in the end.

I'm going to leave off the main deck and one of the upper decks so I can mask and paint the non-skid patterns. I'll give it a shot of primer and Haze Gray in a day or so. Ten days lefts huh? We'll see if I can finish it in time. If not oh well, I'm not going to rush it and ruin everything. I'll re-evaluate this weekend but its looking good so far.

The Reuben James is finished. This new Acadeny kit was great, it had only one minor problem. The molded on vertical ladders do not line up slackened area of the kits photo etch rails. Other than that there was very little filling required. I desided to so the kits masts since they looked about right for the scale. i did replace the kits helicopter with one from my box of spares, the kits did not have all the required windows. I used Light Ghost Grey for all the vertical sides and Gunship Grey for the desk. This looks closer to the actual ship colors than what the kit recommends.

Here is my 1/700 scale SCB-27C USS Hancock CVA-19 circa 1956-57. This is the 1/700 ISW USS Essex SCB-27A Kit that I did a lot of re-work on to make into a 27C. I wanted to show an airwing durring the transition from gloss blue to gloss gull gray.
