In terms of the Revell kit, there is nothing to convert, since it is probably more correct as a pre-war CV-6 than a CV-5. Prior to 1940, they were virtually identical. You would need to add a few CV-5 changes depending on exact time frame, but early on, it is said their own captains had trouble telling which was which, hence the big Y on CV-5's stack. The Revell Yorktown will build into a very good CV-6 up until she got her 20mm's, but you will need to enhance the details regardless of which version you build. Revell also made a version of the kit that is fairly correct for a late 1942 CV-6. The details are crude though, so lots of reworking is needed on either. BUT, the hull and flight deck are very good (and NOT crude) and the details are easily scratch built. Use the Gold Medal Models etched brass set for this kit.

thanks for the help on the conversion. I am gonna go ahead and stay with the earlier design of the ship
it makes it easier to build than the 43 refits and changes to the ship. This kit is lacking lots of detail because of its skill level design but its the right size for my living room space i have. I need to know if u
tell me what scale is closest for parts like railing this kit has none. This is my first build of this type and I love the history of this ship.

well You already answered my question about what scale size was closest sorry about that and thanks again. Now as far as color scheme for the 1942 Enterprise where do i find the exact colors she was in that time. i do have instructions i copied from the tamiya kit 1/700 scale but dont know how accurate it is. I would be grateful for any more tips and help you could give me on this model. oh and one more thing what about decals to convert it. Where do i find the right ones for this.

Can anybody give me detailed info on exact 20 mm gun locations and pictures on the mid 1942 ship.
I can't to find any blueprints that can pinpoint where there all at on the ship. I m trying to convert this 1/485 scale yorktown cv-5 into well the great enterprise cv-6. not having a great deal of experience at this has got me right now. I need planes of the right scale wildcats and dive bombers. making the right modifications is mind boggling with all the inaccurate versions of the ship out there. I m stuck like making the 20 mm tubs the guns go in unless they sell those too. this model doesnt have great detail and i did find the gold models brass sets that you guys on this web sight told me to get thats a big help to me so far thanks.

Give a more specific date. She had many changes throughout 1942 on the 20mm batteries. Something changed on nearly every visit to Pearl Harbor.

ok how about mid june to sept 1942 and just so i m heading in the right direction for this low detailed 1/485 scale kit. do you think converting this into the mid june 1942 ship is the easiest conversion for it besides when she was first launched and pretty close to identical to the yorktown. I want it to resemble her when she was in action and if I go any later the conversion would prob be to complicated for this model.

I have more question mike if you dont since something changed every time she came in for repairs and what not. does the colors that was posted for me stay the same for the mid june 1942 to sept ship. Like the flight deck color norfolk 250-n stain. just want to make sure. again thanks for help. oh I for to ask you if there is any other guns added to that time frame please let me know where at on the ship.

well of course I've ran into another problem.....I can't seem to find decals to convert my 1/485 scale yorktown cv-5 into the enterprise cv-6. The closest I've come is star fighter decals for modelers.com but I dont know if the decals in the 1/480 scale kit for the midway battle are right for my 1/485 scale kit from mid 1942 june to sept. I have to double check to see what all it contains. If anybody has information on where to get the proper decals for my model please let me know thanks.

I'll say this...This is the biggest headache I've ever gottin trying to convert and upgrade a model ever. The 1/485 scale plastic model uss yorktown cv-5. I'm trying to learn how to use photo etched parts for this model and converting it into the uss enterprise cv-6. I dont know hardly anything about photo etched parts and I have to add guns and prob tubs to make my model into a mid june to sept 1942 model of the enterprise I want to say battle of midway if i m right. I need all the help I can get I've been searching the web for other ideas for this type of conversion and well havnt seen anybody thats done somethin close to what I'm doing. I know its because partly the 1/485 scale but its what I got to work with. Its a skill level 2 model thats lacking alot in detail. Mike has giving all the info i have so far and thanks and I guess what I m asking is all modification help and pointers I could get to make this a little easier on me. You have saved me so far and I m really sorry for asking for so much help but my goal is to build the best possible with what i have to work with just finding everything i need is the biggest problem so far. Thanks for the help

The correct scale of the ship you have is 1/480, though it is often refered to as 1/485. Making the ship as she was at Midway is probably one of the easier options.

The good news is all the info you need is in this very thread. I think The Enterprise was in Measure 11 at Midway (Sea Blue and Deck Blue).

Check out page 15 of this thread to get an idea of what guns were present at Midway. Its not exactly clear, but it will give you a very good idea of what you need.

I recommend checking out some 1/350 and 1/700 Enterprise builds. While they're not the scale you're working on, they'll be good examples of what you're trying to build
"Also we will never see a 1/350 late war Enterprise from Dragon due to a paralyzing fear of success...." - Heavy Melder

Lots of unfinished model ships + attention issues = A busy slipway where nothing gets done!

Actually, the Revell kit is neither 1/480 or 1/485 scale. It is 1/487th scale, based on conversion of the actual measured hull of the kit. She was in Measure 21, not Measure 11 at Midway. Measure 11 had been discontinued many months prior, as Sea Blue 5-S was dropped in favor of Navy Blue 5-N, even prior to 12/7/41. CV-6 got fresh paint in march 1942, after 5-S was replaced by 5-N in all measures. The slightly darker blue would be the only difference. Some people say it was Measure 11 using 5-N, because Measure 21 was not yet official, but that is just semantics, as switching from Measure 11's Sea Blue to Navy Blue is exactly what "official" Measure 21 was. She wore 5-N at Midway. Comparison of CV-6's overall color to Hornet's (CV-8) lower hull in Measure 12 Mod, known to be 5-N, shows the same shade in a photo of the pair steaming together.

Dear Guest, just to clarify, the so-called 1/480 scale "Battle of Midway" kit and the recent re-released USS Yorktown kit, now advertised as 1/485 scale, are the exact same molds. The actual scale is 1/487th scale, based on measuring the actual hull and converting. The Battle of Midway version of the kit has added parts to build a late 1942 version of CV-6, and it is not really precise in details for any of them at Midway. And of course, CV-8 would require lots of additional conversion. The only decals you will need for Midway are the draft marks. While CV-5 and CV-8 had small white hull numerals fore and aft, CV-6 seems not to have displayed these at the time. The names on the stern were painted out during the war. On the real ships, these were raised metal letters, so the were visible up close, but they were the hull color. CV-6 had flight deck dashed lines, barely visible in this scale, but these are a tricky thing in decals, best painted with a fine brush.

Well, CV-6 had armament modifications right after Midway, and again, after Eastern Solomons. If it is Midway rig you want, back up a page in the thread to my post of Sept. 10, 2011. I spelled out the full Midway 20mm arrangement for another modeler. Go to http://www.cv6.org/and study the the ship drawings and photos there for more help. Study my post and look for the photos that show them. You will be able to locate them all when you know where to look. Be sure to stay in the date range you want.

Careful with cv6.org, lots of great info, but not always correct. Like this

http://www.cv6.org/ship/camo-radar.htm

I used this earlier when I said the Enterprise was Ms11. It also says their dazzle camo has 5-0, when it is supposed to be 5-N according to the plans

http://www.shipcamouflage.com/DesignShe ... b_CV-6.jpg

So lesson is, always double check sources so you dont lose credibility like me

There are errors on the website to be sure. In fact, I have pointed out most of them. Don't trust the dimensional data, and some of the other stuff like the camo stuff you pointed out, but the photo reference library is what makes it valuable. The poster is a newbie looking for 20mm tub layout. basic stuff that the photos here will show.

You guys are on top of things as far as everything u ve told me help with this build thanks alot.
I have been checking all the threads and forgot about some of the pictures on here. They will help me a great deal now. I can get most of the gun locations. As far as this battle of midway kit 1/480 scale and parts I need is this kit available because the brass set i dont think has everything I need. Do i have to buy another kit to go with this 1/480ish scale kit or can i get additional parts sep. The only thing i was able to find was the gold brass set and i have to study to learn how to use it properly. I do believe its photo etched. You guys have all been a big help to me thanks again.

The parts were not available separately. You need either one of the CV-6 editions of the kit, or the "Battle of Midway" release, which was intended to allow multiple versions (in reality two, only a pre-20mm CV-5 or CV-6, and a late 1942 CV-6 with 20mm tubs can be built). There was also a version put out as CV-8 that came with B-25's. All other versions come with 20 SBD's. Try e-bay for the older releases. Revell of Germany did a "Battle of Midway" release a few years back, so they are around. All the extra parts are for the 20mm tubs around the catwalks, and these are probably too crude anyway. Scratch-building these is do-able without much trouble. The guns in the kit are too crude to use in any event.

well thanks for help so far so good but i need to know if there are any other photo etched kits for my 1/480ish yorktown class skill level 2 carrier. the gold metal models brass set is nice but slightly expensive dont get me wrong you gotta pay for quality but if i cant afford it i need another alternative. I mean the brass set comes with the 20mm and 50 cals and other goodies but is there something cheaper for me to use. I bought the model kit cheap and I do believe its bigger than the 1/700 scale but that comes with more options more upgrade ability. I settled for this one. so if you guys know of any other kits available for my kit let me know before i spend 50 bucks on this brass set. I do know i ll have to scratch build somethings like tubs for my guns and i got all the positions just about right. I just need another alternative for an upgrade kit. Thanks.......

well as far as finding the battle of midway kit out there. I did find two one is the vintage 1976 which i wish i would have found before i bought this one. It will be hard to get there are bids on both of that same year and the other one I seen was a 1/547 scale model of the battle of midway its not gonna work for mine. I didnt find anything from the last few years of the battle of midway but that vintage one would have been perfect for me. both of the vintage models will prob top out as much as the brass upgrade kit. those two kits are rare. so I m still looking for a cheaper upgrade kit to help out a little for detail for my 1/480ish yorktown class kit
