Excuse, I didn't want you to offend. Yours assemblage and painting are very accurate. I simply wanted to show some errors which have arisen because of the wrong Lion Roar instruction.
Look, as these fragments are shown in instruction WEM. It is the correct instruction:

Re: Hasegawa's 1/350 Nagato with Lionroar
This is one of my few, but true, pet peeves about this site. There are a few hard core rivet counters around who feel compelled to repeatedly inform those of us who do not build up to their standards of our shortcomings, and the inaccuracies of our efforts. Not mentioning any names, but I suspect you know who you are. Some of us, and I would go so far as to say probably most of us, while we like to get our models as accurate as our skill level and time to build allow, don't find it a matter of life or death if every detail is not perfect, or perfectly accurate. I build for fun. To me this is a hobby which allows me to relax and free my mind from the concerns, worries and aggravations of the daily grind. Yes, I'm reasonably interested in accuracy, but when I find that the attempt to get a kit "picture perfect" is getting in the way of it being fun and something I enjoy doing, I find that it's time to reassess my approach and come back down to earth.HalseysBeard wrote:Well, now you have me scratching my head. I don't understand...Nagato's funnel was sealed off at the top? I don't understand why a smokestack would be sealed off...was the real ship like that?
and "ugly" is your interpretation, not mine. ie: my sister thinks her poodle is a gorgeous animal but hehe you know what I think yuriy? I think its ugly as sin... but thats my interpretation, not hers
as i tried to tell you before, this is NOT going to be another super-accurate, down-to-the-last-detailed-rivet-in-place copy...thats been done many times and I'm not doing another one
Its highly likely that you, and maybe others, will continue to be disappointed in my build as it goes forward. its the second model I've ever built and surely will not stand up to museum quality projects in comparison. Maybe this board is the wrong place for me to post...
I have no problem with those who want their builds to be as absolutely accurate as possible and strive for museum quality in every effort. But please, understand that many of us do not share that value and do this for fun. I think many of us would quickly find another hobby if we felt we had to build up to museum quality standards every time we sit down at our benches. Constructive criticism is one thing, but intrusive and demeaning comments benefit nobody and do nothing to grow either our hobby, or our site.
I personally find Halsey's efforts to be highly impressive. Certainly well beyond anything I feel I could do with that kit and its PE. For goodness sake, its his second build as I recall. I for one an rather in awe of what he has done with this kit. I'd certainly be proud to have something of that quality on my shelf! Maybe we need another subforum for the rivet counters to hang out in.
IMHO,
Bob

Bob, thank-you very much for your comments! I am interested in the same thing you are it appears...I'd like to be "reasonably" accurate, and build a nice model, and enjoy the process along the way. Thats it for me!
Anyway, I understand Yuriy's points too (thanks for the time you took Yuriy for the research and to post the results. The Lionroar instruction mistakes are disappointing I agree!)

Re: Hasegawa's 1/350 Nagato with Lionroar
Halsey, you are very welcome. I simply feel that its important that folks realize that for many, if not most of us, this is a simply a hobby, something we do for fun and relaxation. I appreciate those who delve into the minute details of the ships they build or are interested in, but I want everybody here to feel like they can contribute to this forum with photos of their builds, even though they may not be 100 percent accurate, or museum quality. Very few of us work at that level. I suspect the vast majority of us are like you and me, build a reasonably accurate and nice looking model, but have fun in the process. There is a point beyond which it ceases to be fun and becomes work, a chore. I'd hate to see members of the forum reluctant to post photos of their work because they don't want to have it picked apart.
IMHO,
Bob

Re: Hasegawa's 1/350 Nagato with Lionroar
I will continue to post updates of my Nagato here as I hope Bob is right...
anyway, here is a better pic the part in question, and side by side with what I chose to go with:

To me, it was like deciding if I should go with the clear plastic peices Hasegawa supplies for bridge windows or using photo-etch pe bridge windows and leaving the plastic peices off. (I am chosing to go with with the pe bridge windows) Maybe some prefer the clear plastic versions...and thats alright too!

Tim, this is great work! I still cannot believe the quality of your etch work. All those titchy guns (in this scale) and all made with equal precision. I have had (chosen) do do some pom-poms in 1/600 for an Airfix HMS Suffolk, and none of them seemed remotely like the others even though I tried!
You are an inspiration, keep posting!
All the best, Ray
PS, Have you posted anything on Britmodeller? Your work reminds me of a superb build on there by 'ComfortablyNumb'. Just wondering as their build was fantastic like this one.

Nice work! For what its worth, I think you made the right choice on which way to go. I wish I had your talent with PE! Something you might consider on the bridge windows, I've tried this a few times and it came out pretty good, is to go with the PE frames and then use Model Master Clear Parts Cement and Window Maker to "make" windows in the frames. You can make a pretty decent window with the stuff by just using some stretched sprue or a fine tool to apply it around the frame, working in toward the center. Dried nice and clear.

Bob, thats a terrific idea. I'll give it a try! I read about that method a time ago and forgot about it and certainly wouldn't have known the name of the product. So Window Maker is the brand name? And do you mix it with Model Master Clear Parts Cement or did you mean to use that cement when installing the frames? Can Window Maker be tinted? You know, like if I wanted a slight green or blue tint to the "glass"?

Re: Hasegawa's 1/350 Nagato with Lionroar
Thanks Bob, Yuriy had me thinking again about it though. I left it off originally because when I was researching other Nagato builds, I had found this pic of a really nice project (I know its not Yuriy's though because the trellis part is in the wrong location in this pic) and I noticed in it that the stack was closed off entirely with that ridge part.robertmelvin wrote: For what its worth, I think you made the right choice on which way to go.

I didn't care for that look on the stack and thought I would paint the inside of my funnel flat black, leave the slats off and the stack open, which looked better to me.
I may still revisit that idea of Yuriy's though... I was thinking if I paint that slats part flat black and dry-brush the ridges a grey colour, you may be able to see the ridges (otherwise they more or less disappear when left black) Anyway...it ain't over till its over

Hi, i can only re-itterate what others have said, this is a superb work of art, your patience and skill with PE is something i aspire to as i said on your Yamato thread. I'm the fool who bought the 1/700 Yamato and Lionroar set
but your threads on here and over at Britmodeller have inspired me to keep trying to attain yours and others on heres level of skill. Keep up the fantastic work

Re: Hasegawa's 1/350 Nagato with Lionroar
Let me second what Mick said. That stack assembly is a work or art. Its almost a shame to cover that PE work with paint! I can see from your comments that you do something which I also do, draw inspiration from the other works I see posted here, be they WIP's or completed builds. I can't begin to credit the debts I owe to other members of this forum for inspiration and guidance. If and when I take on Nagato, your work will surely number among those giving me inspiration and guidance. I can only say that I'm totally blown away by the quality and crispness of your PE work. Simply outstanding!

Re: Hasegawa's 1/350 Nagato with Lionroar
My inspiration also comes from others. Guess you could say im a copy-cat,...I save pics from various builds and try to copy or emulate what I see others have done. Lots of times its just a case of learning what can be detailed. When I see others do it I get the idea and hey!! Light-bulb comes on!
I can look at Navsource pics all day and not get a "clear idea",..but when I see a modeler include those details its a game changer for me.

Same here. And, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. I owe greatly to two contriubtors here for the pictures of their P.T. 109 builds in the gallery. I'm currently doing her up, with the WEM PE set, and I'd be at much more of a handicap, if not totally lost as to what I want to do, without the guidance and inspiration I've gotten from their contributions. A bit thanks to them, and to all the others who post pictures of their work here, whether in the gallery, or simply in the WIP or Completed builds threads.

Most of what you see in my Nagato that is not in the instructions was either imitated or otherwise outrightly stolen from others with more talent and taste than I
