:doh_1: Just bought and watched that DVD two weeks ago; never realized the Spanish war recognition marks were a "point of discussion" and that Pék's model has them in reverse.

Hi guys. I'm in the process of building the Academy 1/350 Warspite with the Pontos set, which by the way is brilliant as is the kit. Can anyone confirm for me that the tops of the turrets in 1943 were painted in dark grey 507A. The kit instruction indicate that they were however I have seen a few photos that suggest that they were painted in the same colour as the sides of each turret.

Thanks.

David Gatt.

Hello David, Mr Raven in Warship Perspective vol. 1 wrote that the turret roofs were AP507B, though I trust him very much, from the pictures looks darker like 507A. There are two things to consider, in that time frame most RN capital ships had dark turret roofs ( 507A ), in black and white pictures the Warspite roofs look darker than the side of the turrets, painted 507B. Anatomy of the ship page 36 has a picture that show very dark roofs under a brilliant sun...

...just a few consideration ... at the moment I'm going to paint mine 507A, perhaps later, better documented people will change my point of view

That's the one I'm waiting for.
Plus, it'll be intriguing to see if they follow up with their own Warspite later in the year too.

... and you will have a lot of fun

I'm well forward building mine, the Academy kit seems free of major flaws, but all the deck fittings are low ( and a bit sparse ) once fitted the wooden deck they are completely submerged. A bit more annoying are the missing boiler vents near the hangar doors and X barbette, but nothing too difficult to fix.

Soo when did Warspite get those shields for her HA anti-aircraft guns?

By that you mean the twin 4" guns? These always had shields.

Mikko, if I'm not wrong, the splinter shields have been added during her late '41 refit in USA.

Thank you Dino.

I was meaning those splinter shields. I was thinking if they were there before the USA repair/refit.

British Pathe short footage "After the battle" (... of Cape Matapan ) so march 1941

Image

She "wear" her early geometrical camo scheme, and there is something around the 4" HA guns, perhaps canvas covered railings.

That British Pathe picture shows canvas over railings i think ? There are photos pre 1941 after her 1934-37 reconstruction clearly showing railings ..
Acording to V.E. Tarrants Battleship warspite " Steel screens fitted outboard of the 4in high angle twin mounts" , at her december 1941 refit at Bremerton usa ...

I was going to send the same picture!

She has the boxlike surface lookoutposts too. (Under the forward pom-poms)
