1/350 HMS Hood (1924)

What ho chaps

well after the embarrassment of loosing my instructions ive made some progress with my Hood
Now this is my first ship model, but ive dont a few aircraft in my time, so i did the obvious thing and orderd a huge brass set from lion roar and decided i wanted to convert the ship to how she appeared in 1924 during the world cruise
im hoping to do a diorama of her alongside possibly in New Zealand or Hawaii once ive completed the ship

Most of these pictures are just mock up try fit, since so much needs to be modified and then sanded/filled im having to do a lot of test fitting, but i hope to be able to glue some more bits down before the weekend heh

Oh my mate is making a 1/700 model of Rodney as i work my way through Hood, and its great having someone suffering as you suffer, but he didnt wanna post any pictures cos he dosent think its any good, i disagree so here a re a couple of pictures of hi Rodders too heh, lemme tell ya i dont think ID be able to do anything in that scale!

so yeh, been kinda working on this a bit in the background here and there, usually when im frustrated on work or whatevr
but being such a slow ass did pay off when they announced the KA wooden decks, which are now fitted to my Hull

so ive decided im going to make a concerted effort to get it finished before xmas sinc works a little light on the ground just now heh

Added the Secondary battery and most of the mushroom vents
(Thats just dust on the Hull there, was sanding some bits before taking the pics) also bootstrap looks way shiny there than it actually is
Gonna need to do some planking on the shelterdeck to fill in gaps there the cut out was originally made for the 1941 fit

Just a few more, added the chains and anchors (WEM) also attatched the PE Ladders to the Quarterdeck

anyhoo need to shift this project up pa gear since i got the awesome Trumpeter 1/350 Repulse and Tamiya 1/350 KGV (really eager to get going on Repulse which im gonna have alongside Hood, you can just see her Alongside on that picture up there)

so heres a bit of an update



Big Kudos to Phill Reeder for putting me onto John Haynes fine model (http://www.johnrhaynes.com/), i got the 1/350 Steam Pinnace's and 4Inch HA Guns (ordered them on the 23rd, they arrived next morning! so deffo worth a look if ya need any fittings)
So Boats are pretty much done, just need some finishing up, ive extended the mainmast to match Hood's original fit, although not in the pics ive also added the 5inch range finders at the base of the search light platform.

so next i think we're onto railings and Awnings (eek)

Thanks guys, yeh Timmy his site was a real god-send, and when i start on Repulse im sure ill be ordering up a few more bits and bobs (really quite cheap too )

Gah, i hate this part of the build, its all the really little fiddly things which seem to take forever and ya never really notice them till they're all done





anyhoo had a real nightmare with the railings, i lay down the sprus to paint them, but when i went to lift them up they they wouldnt budge, paint had gotten under the spru and dried so when i tried to moe them the railings bent and tore

however i had a set with Repulse which i poached snce when i get the Repulse PE im sure they will come with railing s anyway
So HOOD is now in the final fitting out, ive fitted most of the railings, the 4inch HA guns are in place (tho they seem a little oversized to be they'll do) the flying off platform is nearly finished, just need a few tweeks to that and likewise all the search lights are fitted

basicly tomorrow my jobs are to finish fitting the railings and awnings and then tackle the Rigging and she'll be done then the delights of building the scene and the joy of joys of resin water

Wow, been a while....anyhoo

SHE LIVES!!!!





Awnings are done (FINALLY!) and started painting the base, (looks a lot darker in the photos than in real life, ill be pouring clear resin with blue dye) Im rigging Hood at the mo, using very fine fishing wire and gonna start scratch building Station Pier (which i actually got to visit in March when i got to visit the USS Shoup (DDG 82)

This month ive mostly been working on the Pier, which ive built from matchsticks,

actually been kinda cathartic if im honest lol, pretty happy with how it looks at the moment, but im unsure about how or even if i should paint it?
once i glue it to the base im hoping when i do the resin or acrylic gel pour (havent decided on my water method yet, open to suggestions) it will sit around the base of the legs and hide a few gaps where my sanding/cutting was a little enthusiastic hehe.
also need to build half of the Terminal building to sit on the pier, and possibly cut train tracks, i havent decided if im gonna bother with that as yet

do you think i should paint/stain the pier? or leave it as is?

you pier is, actually, a truly piece of art and patience, very stunning.

i'd go for a quite heavy stain however, becouse of the sea water, all of the dust typical of a pier, traces of the vehicles and cargos, eventually some coal fired steamer moored at the pier...so a quite dark stain in my opinion will go, with a careful weathering with chalks and pastels (even with white chalk, simulating some salt traces on the wood...)

just my 2 cents, as it is the pier is however fantastic!

also, how did you do the water in your Breakers yard Diorama?

hi andy!
for the stain i'd go with a wash (oil or enamel) of raw sienna and black, heavily thinned...but it depends mainly from the wood the "real thing" was made of.t
then i'll add some light gray wash to higlight salt concrection and sunlight effect..my 2 cents, i'm not used to work with wood, i'm sure that someone here can give you better hints than mine!

for the sea a used mr. Jim Baumann technique of using artist watercolor paper, airbrushed with lifecolor acryls and then covered with several layers of lifecolor gloss clear.
actually those are not layers, but i splothced not-thinned clear paint in huge blobs textured punching with an old soft brush...

(and for your idea of doing the ships on their slips during construcion...well, that's inspiring :D)

well literally dusted off the Hood to get back to it

had to secure the ship to the base, but annoyingly the keel had bowed somewhat making it kinda hard to glue down, especially with the extremely delicate awning over the quarterdeck

i used a couple of wood screws under 'A' and 'X' Turret which seemed to do the trick, but then the fwd hull seperated from the keel plate

so had to find a way to re-glue the hull down without crushing the railings and other deck furniture
for the prosecution, exhibit 'A'


so anyway once that had dried i added some Acrylic gel medium over the sea base to give it some shine, and better seal the ship to the base, it will dry complely clear so it wont have the white you can see in these pics once dry







so hopefully if that all dries ok ill glue the pier down, (im still unsure about how/if i should paint/weather that tho, open to suggestions

feels good to be back working on my first love

Working on the cage antenna rigging, basically fishing line + Micro Rig Ring Rounds, still trying to figure out the best way to transfer this over to the Ship heh
