 The light bulb finally comes on !!!

Thats the whole upper elevator we see up in the air ! I had always assumed that one elevator made the trip between all three levels, rather than a second platform.

If I am envisioning this right now, an aircraft coming from the lower level would need to be moved off to the mid level...then the upper lift lowered to bring it up to the flightdeck. What a logistics nightmare this must have been during operations.
(edit: ok I get it now...the lower forces the upper in to the air ...... I'm thinking this out tooo much :doh_1: )

Hmm.....I wonder if they ever left a plane on the upper elevator while bringing the lower elevator up to the flightdeck. The gears are turning now.....thanks guys.

Linoleum on walkways on side of hull?

Post by CJ45 »

Dear Colleagues

Am making the Hasegawa triple deck Akagi. Around the level of lower flying off deck, above the gun deck with its casemates can be found walkways which girdle the outside of the hull. The have doors which must enter the lower hanger. Does anyone know if they would have a linoleum red coating? Hasegawa does not put 'stair rods' along these so perhaps they are just grey steel like the hull?

All information welcome!

Thanks

There's no corroborating information that survives, one way or another. Some walkways were covered with linoleum, others with treaded steel.

They send the elevator down so the top elevator is at upper hanger level and then place an aircraft on it then lift it to the flight deck and as it is rolling off put another aircraft on the platform at upper hanger level and then lift it to the flight deck when upper platform aircraft is off on the flight deck. Then do the oposite when lowering.
Put the aircraft on the 2nd platform at fltdk level and lower. While the aircraft is being handled at upper hanger level an aircraft is being put on the first platform at fltdk level and then elevator is lowered to upper hanger level.

Gidday all have been building a Hasagawa Akagi I, I have it on hold as I have run out of storage display areas but I will be completing soon. I have been trying to find a rigging diagram for the deck and mast antennas, there is very little detail in the instructions just a simple side view.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get a more detailed drawing? I have been looking at completed model photos but they never show all the details such as where the rigging attaches to the ship etc And many of the models have different rigging.

Hope you can help.

I looked all over at pictures of the Akagi off the web and found a utube video of a model of Akagi in Japan based on the Battle of Midway configuration. The meatball on the front is wrong though. It was a flag (meatball with white background) at Midway like Soryu's instead of Hiryu's.
This has a little bit of the rigging. Just pause the video.
If I find anything else I will post it for you.

Gidday Denisjp, thanks for the info. The video is hard to make out exact attachment to deck or structure, thankyou so much for finding for me. I am amazed that rigging details wouldn't be standard in the kit.

Yes, I know what you mean. They were there before in some Tamiya kits I bought, but again you have to check the accuracy. I would say the best thing todo is go to HLJ.COM and go to their book section and select naval related to the left where it asks for types and publishers ect. and find you a good Japanese CV book or a book on Akagi. Maybe that will help you as well. Also AJ PRESS has 1/400 scale plans of the Akagi that I believe show her rigging.

I'm going to the Arizona Memorial in February; if this isn't "resolved" by then I'll shoot some photos of Don Pruel's 1/96 Akagi.

On the tora tora tora Akagi model, isn't the island on the wrong side. Shouldn't it be on port side? I've watched movie many times and you would think they would know which side to put the island on.

Yes, it's on the wrong side. They did that so that the model would match the USS Yorktown, CV-10, which was used in the production as a stand-in for Japanese carrier during the launch sequence.

Atma!

When will Fujimi come out with Kaga full-hull at a scale 1:700?

Best Regards

Well with Hiryu now out in 1/700 and 1/350 from Fujimi I think Kaga is just right around the corner, considering all they have to do is make a bigger copy of their 1/700 scale one.
Probably seeing on how the modelers world responds to the model and how the sales went.

1/350 Akagi details

Post by johnbishop »

Currently working on the big Akagi and am considering using the Veteran Models detail parts. Which ones would be applicable and how many? I already have 2 of the twin 25 mm gunmount packs.

Yes, I have been there several times. Used to live in Honolulu. Very nice place. Especially the models of the Arizona before and after, and the gift shop I thought was really nice. Nice selection of books last time I was there.
