The Mr. Color line of paints from Gunze Sangyo includes an "IJN Grey (Mitsubishi)" in their paint line. WEM paints do not (that I am aware of).

You'd have to check the paint equivalency charts linked to in this board's FAQ section to find a recommended match or similarity in another line.

I believe I have a bottle or two of the Mitsubishi and can offer a personal comparison versus WEM/Tamiya/Model Master greys if you want a first-hand impression.

I've found the Gunze Sangyo paints a bit harder to get comfortable with than the others I've used. When I returned to modeling 12 or so years ago, I started with Model Master, migrated to Tamiya (which I find very forgiving), bought some Gunze for several special projects, and have since started using WEM paints (which are wonderful). My Gunze problems may be related to not having used them with their "Leveling Thinner," which was hard to find in the US for a period. Now have a lifetime backstock of such, but have not gotten back to projects I was using Mr. Color on.

Guess I am sharing this to say a close match in your preferred brand might be the way to go.

I am not familiar with the Gunze paint shade but one of my Japanese contacts has written me on the subject. According to his information, the Misubishi Nagasaki yard used a grey that was the same shade as the Sasebo NY. IIRC, that would be the darkest shade of IJN grey.

WEM does produce a "Sasebo Gray" in their paint line.

Tamiya produces an IJN Gray (Sasebo Aresenal) in their spraypaint line, but has no matching acrylic for airbrushing or handbrushing. They do have a matching acrylic for their Kure rattle can.

Are you saying that Tamiya has discontinued their XF77 Sasebo ?

Frustrating times for those who paint IJN. I wish someone would pick up the old Polly S IJN shades, Kure, Sasebo, Maizuru and Yokusuka, all in one line of paint...no mixing, no switching thinners etc...... those were the days

Looks like I was looking at an out-of-date page on IJN paint colors, as a quick Google search just showed XF-77 available widely on the Internet. Sorry for that. Have never had it in my paint line-up in bottle form - will have to get some!

Hi White Ensign produce all three paint colours for the three yards, they are however enamal paints.

I have the Nagara in 1/350 finished and it is a very good kit with PE, but had to add railings from another source.

Hopefully there will be more 5'500 tonners from Fujimi... for example a late war Oi or Kitakami?

Wow that's good news to hear! Any word on an Abukuma? And I'm still surprised too hear.. Or lack there of any word of a new tooled Yahagi and class in 1/700 scale. Did the 1/350 scaled kits from Hasegawa sell poorly?
