I spoke with a gentleman today who was assigned to USS Nevada during the December 7 attack. Amongst other things I asked him if Oklahoma was painted the same color as Nevada, his response was that all div 1 battleships were painted the same. I hope to have more conversations with him as he was assigned to the Nevada until Dec. of 42. He was part of a Marine detachment and may have helped in removing the teak decks while Nevada was in overhaul at Bremerton.

I added the "Marine detachment" just for you.

Very nice man. I hope to visit with him after Christmas.

There's a vet from the California down in Chehalis who hangs out at the Veterans Memorial Museum quite often... very nice guy who'll bend your ear about his ship if given a chance....

First, put it into a trash compactor and shrink the hull by about 20 scale feet long, and about three wide. :heh:

I tried that conversion from Arizona to Oklahoma. If you remove the strip of hull after the last 5/51, that'll get you close to hull length, but my conversion plan went to hell with the bow - the Oklahoma bow is much thinner, and the two old casemates are a completely different shape. The Oklahoma bow is most like the Texas, except one deck higher.

I think the Banner kit is already too narrow on the beam for Arizona so it could be close enough

With that kit, they probably made it too thin for a Nevada class on purpose to foil anyone trying to do this. :heh:

Hey everybody, are all the 1/700 kits of the Nevada class out of production now? I've been doing some searching and all I can find is that no one makes them anymore. Any help would be appreciated

It looks like the Midships kit is OOP. This may be released again (Blue Ridge models?) or you can check ebay. The other alternative is HP models which has a 1941 and 1945 fit, but the kit is expensive.

My father served as a CQMA on the USS Nevada (BB36) from 20 Nov 44 through to the end of the war. Understandably, I'd wonder of anyone remembers him, especially anyone in the Puget Sound area. His name was Tom Raywood. Post image if I knew how.

Aloha Guest - I'm guessing you live in the Puget Sound area?

I know of a vet off of the California that hangs out at the Veterans Memorial Museum in Chehalis, you might contact them to see if they know of anyone from Nevada. There doesn't seem to be a reunion association any more...

Hi,
I am new to this forum. I am building a model of the USS Nevada. I recently finished casting, assembling and painting several of the 5in 51 Caliber secondary guns. All the photos of these guns are in black and white. With that, one can tell the components of the guns that are painted or left natural metal however, one cannot not tell the type of metal they are. I know the training and elevating rollers are brass, but thats about it. Spcifically, I'd like to know the type of metal used in the breech area of the gun. Any help on this would bw apprected. Thanks

Here's a color shot of one of Olympia's 5"/51s.

Here's a color shot of a transport circa 1942. Note that the brass wheels are painted (may not even be brass) but other smaller fittings are left natural metal, notable the recoil portion of the barrel.

Here's some shots of Texas' 5"/51s. Note the breeches and a majority of the guns are painted, save for the brass wheels. This might be because its a museum ship, she was demilitarized, and/or she had different models of the guns that did away unnecessary brass fittings. Don't know though, just making some educated guesses, sorry.
