Blast bags can be removed any time from a battleships without any particular reason. And by the way, I dont think that is ever reported that a blast bag can be blown away during a fight.

I received the Trumpeter 1:700 QE yesterday. It is an absolute gem! I need help. I am traveling and do not have access to my library. I need that wonderful overhead shot of QE reproduced on two pages in Hough's DREADNOUGHT. if somebody owns the book, would you mind scanning it for me? It is absolutely necessary for painting the decks. Many thanks.

Has anybody ever deciphered the details of WARSPITE's spring 1941 "Alexandria" scheme. The only two views of it I know about are the Pathe film cited above and a view of the pattern on the bridge tower taken during repair in the USA in autumn 1941.

I'm starting to "accumulate" info and aftermarket items to build HMS Warspite as she was in mid 1943. First time for me for a British ship. Is there a good reference or diagram of the second camoflage scheme she used in WW II? There seems to be some discussion that it was not symmetrical as some illustrations show. Also, where were the additional 20mm guns located? Thanks.

The 20 mm positions indicated in the Academy kit should be good for the time frame comprised between june 43 and june 44. Before D day four twin 20 mm were added, two on the signal deck and two unknown, at the same time four single mounts were removed.

I'm not well documented about the camo pattern for that period, I'm sorry.

This was it, but later it was well worn and could have lost its clean camo look.

This shows her when she broke her moorings and ran aground on the Cornish rocks, as you can see she still has her camo applied be it worn, photo taken just before she was broken up for scrap .

There were definitely at least two camo schemes applied to Warspite. Up until her second camo in 1943 the pattern was made up of sharp rectangular shapes.
I think there might have been a change in her last camo as can be seen in the images above on the starboard side of the main superstructure where it looks like the pattern is more of a wrap around design as opposed to asymmetrical one as portrayed in the Academy instructions.

Could anyone enlighten me as to which colour Warspite's boats were painted? I believe the Admiral's Barge was white below the waterline and green above it but I can't seem to find out what colour the motor launches and cutters were.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi There

I am building Academy's premium edition and I have a problem decifering what goes on the stern deck between the last two bolards. Academy on their kit plans show an AA and the anchor chain going to the capstain at the froward end of the deck, Their Photo Etch instructions don't show where it starts from. I have checked other ships in the gallery and all the photos of the real ship, they all show different things, real ship photos of the stern are hard to find and see the configuration on the deck. Some models show the AA gun between the bollards and some don't. If the AA isn't there what is there for the anchor chain, All instructions and photos I have seen don't make it very clear.

I hope I am explaining this sufficiently enough to get help from you guys.

There should be no anchor chain aft as she didn't carry the stern anchor at this point in time.

My bad - Bill posted that in the "Battleship" section as a new thread and I had assumed he was talking about the Warspite kit; he was probably talking about the Graf Spee instead.

Looking a photos from 1943 to her end I can see slight modifications in Warspites camo. I don't have really good references though for her. In particular I think the starboard side pattern was modified as I described earlier. Also there was an additional patch of dark grey added to the rear top of the funnel. The Academy instructions show her without the patch, but I have seen clear photos of her with the patch. Also the lines on the forward superstructure look much more parellel/angular actually, in her final config than they did in 1943.

Hope there's someone who can confirm this.

I beleave on the 20mm AA guns, two were later added to the stern , the other two as mentioned earlier making four added after 1943.

I'm far from knowlegeable on this subject but in the research I have done, I have never seen the symmetrical camouflage that is shown in the Academy instructions. In fact, Anatomy of the Ship - The Battleship Warspite, shows her scheme as being the same as in the photos posted by myself and Captain Pugwash.
Also this is on the back cover:

From 1943 until the end of her active career Warspite wore this pattern of camouflage

Forgive me if you are aware of this, but I am really interested if there was another scheme between 1943 and her final days.
