Mr. Atma, if you know, does the "detail-up super" for Agano (Yahagi) includes the "basic" P.E set parts or not? Do I need to buy both sets for the complete set?

Like all of Hasegawa's other 1/350 detail sets, each set is needed in order to complete the model - the Super Detail-Up set has no overlapping parts with the Basic set; the Basic A set contains mainly just rails, the Basic B contains radar and other such things, while the Super set contains PE parts for the hangar/flight deck structure and brass barrels. See pictures in the links below:

I have them and they are a beautifully executed set of PE parts. Just makes the kit a very expensive proposition, though.

Yes, but seemingly by some details set B corresponds to set D and set A corresponds to set C, don't you think? The cruiser has one funnel, why is there two funnel grills?

Sets B and D :

No! As Timmy said, none overlap.

Yahagi the "cheap" way?

Hello gents, I'm considering to buy the 1/350 Yahagi, but I think that the price of the three Hasegawa PE sets is outrageous  so this is my question, which PE would you use instead of the Hasegawa sets? As example I was considering the Gold Medal Models Japanese Battleship set, any idea?

Thank you in advance.

Hello, check this:
http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery ... index.html
Bill Kluge on his excellent IJN Yahagi used the Gold Medal Models IJN Takao set PE instead of the Hasegawa's one. And it seems that it worked nicely.

GMM makes an excellent 1/350 IJN railing set. Hatches, catapults, vents and other accessories can be had from FlyHawk, LionRoar, Voyager, etc. Not sure that you need more as the Hasegawa kit is excellent.

Thanks for the advice guys! I think I'll buy some generic fittings from Alliance Modelworks, they should alow me to complete at least a pair of ships.

Dan you think is possible from a IJN Yahagi kit(the Hasegawa's 1/350 one) is easy to make a IJN Noshiro or IJN Sakawa ? In other words, does it require more work to build IJN Yahagi as a IJN Noshiro or IJN Sakawa than IJN Mogami/IJN Mikuma into a IJN Suzuya/IJN Kumano ?
Thanks in advance.

A conversion of the 1/350 Yahagi (but not the Agano) kit to either Noshiro or Sakawa should be relatively painless, particulary for a fit of mid 1944 on. At that point, Noshiro and Yahagi are essentially identical with the searchight towers reworked to one on the centerline, and the Type 94 HA directors atop new crew rest quarter structures, as depicted by the Yahagi 1945 kit. Further, these two ships and Sakawa only differ in the shape of the top of the aircraft handling platform, and single 25mm AA mount placement.

The best guide to converting Yahagi to Sakawa is probably the two completed ships as seen in the Model Graphix volume devoted to Mr. Noboru Yahagi's models. He just may be the best IJN modeler that I know of. His technique and research are flawless.

This book is available thru both HobbySearch and HobbyLink Japan: See: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10112554

An example of his Sakawa conversion and Yahagi is posted below. His Yahagi also appears in Navy Yard Special #13, and a new waterlined version of Yahagi in #14. Model Art Ship Modeling Special #19 is also helpful.

A qucki guide to the shape of the aircraft handling deck is shown in the 2nd photo, which is taken from the 1/1250 Takara offerings on this class. Top to bottom is Agano, Noshiro, Yahagi, Sakawa

Some pics of the new Hasegawa 1/350 Noshiro release. It's hard to tell in these photos but, I think the only significant change from the Yahagi kit is the surface of the aircraft handling deck, and fewer single 25mmAA. I'd be tempted to trade that aspect of my Yahagi kit/PE for Noshiro's if anyone is thinking about getting the Noshiro kit.

Would the Yahagi had linoleum covered decks in 1945? It seems I remember reading the IJN was doing away with it for fire prevention reasons.

Thoughts?

Only internal linoleum was stripped away. External linoleum remained. There are better pics of Sakawa's deck but this is all I have available right now. Tie down strip right in the foreground.
