This photo may be helpful to you. It shows the props/rudder area fairly well. In combination with the link to the drawing from a couple posts ago, you should be able to modify the stern appropriately.

I don't know if you want to go that far but the Sovremenny has a stern thruster, as shown here.

G'day Bob,

That is a great pic, even better than the previous one and it will be very useful, thank you very much. I now have what I need to modify the rudder area. The Bronco kit has many of he flaws of the Trumpy kit as I stated previously, and whilst I will not correct the poorly defined knuckle at the bow, I think getting the number of rudders correct is a must!

cheers,

Pappy

Well, if you're going to be a rivet-counter, sure. :heh:

If there are any other areas you need photos of, let us know. Someone is sure to have something helpful. Good luck!

Question regarding the dome at the bow of the Sovremenny class:

Should someone paint the fore tip a different colour or is the whole dome the same colour?

And what colour would that be?

i had not noticed that pic before... Really helpful...

Another question, hopefully the last one.... Regarding the two midships cranes. There is one on each side of the funnel, based on the main deck. Does anyone have a good plan showing their layout and how they work? There are too many pulleys and winches involved and photos are not really that helpful....

Thanks in advance...

Peppe gracie tanto... Questo aiuta molto.

I also need a "rigging" diagram. How the cables run from each pulley. This is really complicated.. With that much space the could have used a hydraulic crane... :Mad_6: :Mad_6:

Now this is really interesting. From what I can make out, the lower boom is not part of the crane but for ras maybe??? Something for transporting heavy objects from one ship to another?

And the top boom is actually the crane, using two winches. The manually operated one on the boat deck is for hoisting the load and the one on the deck below is for pivoting the boom.

What do you think?

Peppe thanks again... :thumbs_up_1:

Nick,

Your theory of rigging looks to be right. Also a third cable above the top part of your red cable to support the weight. A couple things to keep track of: Red cable to be tucked between the boom and the stack as it decends. And yellow cable to be on the outside of red cable.

Look this photo though, which I used for the rigging reference.

Image

I have marked with question marks two points that might need clarification. First of all, there might be a line from the hand winch to the boom directly. Second, there migt be a line extending from the lower pulley to the electric winch and not the hand winch. So the electric winch can be used for the load and the two hand winches for pivoting the boom.

The next thing I noticed is that in the above pic you can clearly see a straight antenna on the left side and a ring antenna on the right side.

But in the photo Peppe posted you can clearly see rings on both sides of the funnel.... :eyes_spinning: :eyes_spinning: :eyes_spinning: :eyes_spinning:

Bob check in the photo you posted the green lines and the circle I have added. You can see the shadow of the other crane in the circle. Also check the second green line that goes from the crane edge to the lower winch, as I have previously noted.
ImageImage

The boom definately pivots by use of the two hand winches. The only question is whether the forward electric winch is used for the hoisting or if there is a small electric winch at the base of the top hand winch, that I doubt it. We need a good photograph taken ontop of the boat deck...

Regarding the ras equipment, there is an electric motor at the base of the poll, and a pulley at it top, so I guess there is a cable running down the interior of the poll, like an automated tensioning system. The two perpendicular cylinders are for protecting the rest of the equipment and for holding the line in place...

There is a difference to the lines from left to right. First of all, both the lower winches are used for turning the equivalent cranes aft. On the right side the line that turns the crane aft passes to a pulley at the side of the hangar and then to the lower winch. On the other side the line passes through a pulley on the main deck and then to the lower winch.
( :Mad_5: :Mad_5: :Mad_5: :Mad_5: I always confuse port and starboard in english, do not know which is which and speek like a landlumber even after 14 years in the navy)

In one photo i posted you can see the left arrangement, even though there is a pulley at the left side of the hangar that can be used similarily to the right arrangement.

My biggest issue is the way the load is lifted. This cannot be by hand...

If only I could find a decent aerial view of the midships area...

I have a question regarding the chinese ships of the class. Where they specifically built for China or where some of them transfered to China after being built for Russia?
