Just Crusin' - January 2012 to September 2012

I might join this group build. I will probably be doing a scratchbuilt 1/350 USS Alaska in a modernized fit. I might also enter my 1/350 USS Yorktown, if I can ever fix some of the problems that terrible kit has. Luckily I only paid $20 for it. Also, would a CA/CVE count for the group build?

I finally put a little more time in on the San Francisco. I worked on the depth charge racks, 20mm gun mounts, ships' boats and rafts.

Added detail to the midships ship's boat davits.

Now, doesn't using five pictures to show what little I've done make it look like I really did alot?

There are some very nice builds in this group!! It's getting tough to "keep up with the Jones's"


Work is continuing on the USS Albany, I went to the link that is in the CASF Oregon City class ships to find some very large and useful pictures of Albany.
The downside is after looking at them I am finding many things I want to modify in the kit.

I have started building and detailing the forward superstructure part of the kit....


All the radar needs some tlc to help improve their look, the SPW-2 guidence radars I was hoping I could just dish in the front of the radar add a wire for the anntena in the dish.... that was until I looked at the before mentioned pictures.


now I am going to carve off the dish, use a punch and die set to form a new dish and add the anntena to it, once that is done it will be glued to a modified mount and railings installed around it........ Geeezzz, does Albany have a lot of handrailings!!!!


The SPS-30 will be the easiest to enhance, I will just sand out the dish and modify the shape of the feedhorn...


For some reason Dragon didn't have the tower that the SPS-39 radar sits on..... even though they give you the towers for the SPG-49 radars. Go figure.
Looking thru my spare p/e parts I came up with some towers for an IJN Aoba class cruiser
which by cutting of the top two sections I was able to make a decend tower for the sps-39..... I am still looking at the SPS-39 and trying to determine if I can add some detail to it, it is awful small for my big fingers!




Looking at the photos some more, I found some changes I will need to make on the SPS-49 illuminators. The Okieboat.com website has some awesome CAD work of the Talos system which have helped as well as the photos. (I wonder if we will see a plastic kit of USS Oklahoma City as the CAD work is done...... hint, hint Dragon)

This is the first time I have had such large photos to work with, and using them is fun, the Albany is a very good kit out of the box, and IF I can do my part using these photos she will be even better!

The San Francisco has been primed, the lower hull has been painted red and the corners have been cut in and she is just about ready for a coat of Navy Blue paint. I hope to have her painted blue by Sunday evening. That's my goal anyway.

After seeing Gordon's progress with the San Francisco I rhought I should get something done also... So here we are:






Kometa I will be watching closely your work, you are working on my favourite class of ships... My next project, after the SF and the Mobile Bay, is a Baltimore with Lioroar super detail set..

So how is everyone doing? Great progress on what I've seen so far. As for me, I'm still on this Akagi. It is going much slower than I imagined, haven't even started the Yahagi yet.

If I said I was working on my model, I'd be lying. My Ryurik is my main concern with Mosquitocon a mere month away. I'm really trying to finish all of my started projects first, but Averoff certainly is 3rd on the list: Ryurik II, Scharnhorst, Averoff, 1984 NJ... I want to tackle the Trumpeter Roma (1/350) but I simply don't have room to put another hull on the workbench. Being that this build allowed started models, I should have entered the Ryurik II, but it's far too late now.

The progress on my San Francisco has come to a halt as I'm have some paint issues. I'm down to my last two and a half bottles of Testors' MM Acryl Marine paint. I want to use it on my USS Independence CVL22 and for the hull on the Atlanta that will be released later.I hope that I will have enough left over from the Independence to do the Atlanta. I have two bottles of Polly S Navy Blue left also and I'm thinking that I'll paint the SF with it but I'm also already using it on my 1944 USS Iowa. Maybe I'm just stalling because I don't fell like masking the SF's hull.

1) I continue work on russian cruiser Boyarin, 1903
2) I planned to tackle the Bronco's Chih yuen as built
3) would a "Cruiser class brig" from langton qualify?

Time goes by so fast and my progress has been pretty slow on this build. I see that it has been two weeks since I last posted something on the SF. Yesterday was paint the boot stripes day. I got the boot stripes painted on the San Francisco and the two Bensons DDs that I'm working on. This morning I had to touch up a couple of hull red areas on the SF that weren't covered completely, so I repainted the again.

I needed a break from installing the deck anti skid mats on my 1940 USS Benson build, so I decided to paint the San Francisco Blue today, with it being Friday the 13th. So, after two painting sessions she is now Navy Blue. I needed the second session to cover the areas I missed during the first session. I used the Polly S Navy Blue 5N paint (F505334)that I had and added a little Polly S Deck Blue 20B (505338) to darken the Navy Blue.

I hope to get a chance to paint the decks next week.
