Re: Calling all Kirov, Slava & Ushakov class fans
Greeting I am currently working on a 1/350 scale model of the Kirov. I need assistance determining the Symbol on Kirov bridge wing. It seems to be a baby blue color and appears to have a ship on the bottom and the Soviet Naval Jack on the top. From what i can tell the symbol has stayed the same during the lifetime on the ship. I plan on making a decal of the symbol if i can determine what it is and hopefully find a decent image of it.
I have attached some pictures for reference.

Thanks Ben

The unit emblem is for Rocket ships. I found this chart on line, but I know I have (or had) a clear copy somewhere. I cannot post the image due to the length of the address so here is the link.

Ben, after digging through my files I found my copy of that page. It was from a US Navy publication around 1980 that had color plates of Uniforms, insignia, unit emblems and unit awards. I can scan it in for you. Email me off board - crlandrum83(at)gmail.com

Hi there
Just wondering what anyone thought about this build thread, 1:200 scale Peter the Great, Card Model. It looks impressively detailed.

Re: Calling all Kirov, Slava & Ushakov class fans
I am starting my Peter the Great build in 1/350. On page 12 of this thread Adaks posted three pics of the ship with the main deck not painted red but a much darker colour. Does anyone have more information or other pictures of the ship in this state?
Here are the three photos I am refering to:

Probably the same dark grey you see on some of their other ships; here's a sample from Varyag when she visited Vancouver last year:

Re: Calling all Kirov, Slava & Ushakov class fans
Thanks a lot Tim. Appreciate the photos, post some more if you have, I need them because I am halfway through my Varyag build as she was when visiting San Francisco a couple of years ago.
Basically I need more info on the time period the ships was painted this way. I know that in 2009 Pyotr Veliky had red decks. When did she have the grey decks? When the ship was under Soviet or Rusian flag? Furthermore the grey paint is much lighter the the usual grey Rusian navy uses...

Re: Calling all Kirov, Slava & Ushakov class fans
I was sadly not there in person when she was visiting, so what pics I have are from friends who went and gathered from the internet. As a result, the photos are generally low-rez as newspaper websites hate posting high-rez and my friends upload them to Facebook, which compresses them. A pretty good place to find more is on Flickr - quite a few people have posted shots of the visit there.
But here's what I've got - download them quick as imgur will delete them if no one views them for three months:

This colour scheme is also standard on Udaloy class destroyers for the main deck only.
The picture of Velikiy with this colour appeared first around 2002 (give or take a year) when participating in a large scale exercise in the Baltic sea (one of their very first exercises of that type after a long period of "deadness"). Also participating were the Ustinov and other capital ships.
Not sure how long she kept that colour scheme though.

Many thanks Neptune... That was the info I needed... What do you guys think about the grey paint? What colour would you use? I am thinking of some kind of very light grey...

Depends what you are up to. If you want to depict her at the moment of these pictures, then a light grey would do fine, or at least a toned down version.
If you want to depict them at a different time then the one from these pictures, you might have to use a darker version. They always start dark, but rapidly fade into a lighter grey.

I mostly use barley grey for Rusian - Soviet warships. But this time I am thinking of using a much lighter colour. I want something different, since I already have a 1/200 Sovremenny, an Udaloy and a Varyag.

Re: Calling all Kirov, Slava & Ushakov class fans
While browsing through the gallery I found that someone had scratchbuilt Peter the Great in 1/350 scale back in 2007 and had painted the ship like I want to paint it.
http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery ... index.html
My main concern is regarding the forcastle deck colour. The photographs we have from that time period are of the aft part of the ship. I have to find photos of the fore part of the ship and I will try to contact Mr Joe Chan in order to ask him why did he paint the decks this way. I was going to paint all of the main deck in dark grey but Mr Chan's model has the fore deck painted in red/orange colour.
If anyone can provide more info or has access to any Russian Navy forums I would really appreciate it...

Many photos are incorrect. Pjotr Weliki has the correct red color of the ship's deck.

Jrg if you are reffering to the dark deck colour, forum member Atom44 has posted these pics of Peter the Great in 2002 at a Russian forum:
